thanks man.
good luck on the tests, if you study hard you should do fine
i need to mail in my 609a certification test
|
Don't bother, BMW doesn't recognize it. They use the MACS certification.
|
The 609a certification is required by the US government to recover and recycle REfridgereant and also to purchase it so you really do have to have it. Either one you take it's the same test from both of them from what I was told by a guy at BMW the one I have will work them so IF I work for BMW if the Audi thing doesn't pan out it will work at his dealerships.
|
from what i understand the 609 is only required for R-12.
i was never offered the 609 certification at anypoint in any of my training. Even through BMW which was being run by UTI which offers it through their course.

Actually 609a is required for both R-12 and R-134a by the US Government. It's a universal test everywhere except for Wisconsin for some reason they have their own because they are even more strict on the subject. The fact that you can now face upto $50,000 in fines if they catch you working on an Air Conditioning system in a way that COULD release refridgerant into the air and you don't have the certification. It's only $15 and it doesn't expire so it's not a bad idea. So unbolting the AC compressor and setting it asside when you pull an engine is fine but messing with anything else...

it kind of amazes me that they didn't offer that to me at any point. but whatever. It's extremely pointless anyway because chances are if someone needs A/C work done, it's because they are already releasing freon into the atmosphere it really just seems to be another revenue pit for the gov't

thanks! I'm trying to get accepted into the in-house BMW STEP program at my school, 1 of 8 training facilities in the united states
even though competition is stiff, i'm pretty sure i'll get in
if not, i'll just apply to a BMW dealership and try to become a master BMW tech in about 5 years. at that point i'll probably want to work on exotics for a change, porsche probably, maybe lambo/ferrari later on if i get lucky...

Freon is a brand name used in Refridgerators not cars it's R-22...
The government really doesn't get any of the money though the fact that most of the manufacturing plants for Refridgerant were in the parts of Asia that got hit by the Tsunami, the money goes to them which at the moment has gone up around 300% in the past 4 months.

not true, R-12's common name is Freon, so if a refridgerator uses R-12 it uses Freon and vice versa
at least that's what I learned from my A/C teacher, i'm pretty sure he knew what he was talking about

well yes and no It is frequently referred to as Freon but it isn't Freon is a registered trademark of The DuPont company and they produced it only for refridgerators so yes it is commonly referred to as Freon but isn't if you get what I mean. My A/C teacher did a short stint with DuPont just before going to Ford.

oh, i see
its basically the same thing as someone asking for Kleenex when they really mean tissues because you have some other brand of tissues instead of kleenex
i thought freon was a shortened chemical name for r-12

yeah you got it now it's just like Kleenex Freon was the version of R-12 used for household products but the name became the common nickname for R-12 just like Kleenex.
