Million-Dollar Ferrari Crashes in Malibu
From a Times Staff Writer
A driver lost control of a Ferrari sports car traveling 120 mph along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu this morning, slamming into a power pole that cut the car — which sells for up to $1 million — in half, according to authorities.
One man suffered minor injuries. He was identified as Stefan Erikssen, of Bel-Air, said Sgt. Philip Brooks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The sports car went airborne and struck a power pole 5 to 10 feet off the ground, Brooks said. The car was demolished, but two air bags deployed.
"You pay a million bucks for a car, you expect safety," Brooks said.
Investigators said they believe the driver was alone in the car and was engaged in a street race at the time of the accident. Erikssen told them the driver of the car fled on foot, but a search turned up no one, Brooks said.
The crash took place about 6:15 a.m. near Decker Canyon Road, an exclusive area of multimillion-dollar estates overlooking the Pacific in west Malibu, near Leo Carrillo State Beach.
The car — reportedly a Ferrari Enzo worth between $600,000 and $1 million — has a top speed of more than 200 mph.
Traffic on PCH was disrupted this morning during the investigation of the incident.
Brooks said the area is not known for street racing.
"We get some speed violations, but nothing over 70 mph," Brooks said.

So a 120mph street race? And the driver fled?
Apparently the car was owned by Chris Meek (a keen car collector in the UK) at some stage - don't know whether he still own(s/ed) it :bah:

True, but it is relatively narrow and twisty in some places.

BTW there's sth. fishy here:
1. Erikssen had a blood-alcohol level of .09, which is above the legal limit...
2. The passenger had blood on his mouth; and both airbags on the car deployed, but only the driver's side airbag had blood on it, not the passenger side...
do you still buy the story of the fled driver?

Well - this is supposedly the most "inside" inside info you're gonna get... a member on the Z06 Forum posted this yesterday - he hasn't been a BSer up till now, so may be true..

Amazing that these guys were not hurt. Vids claim the speed was 200 MPH.....but who knows

I had a front row seat. He came up behind me over a slight rise passed me in the #2 lane already out of control with the car a foot in the air. Had to be doing way over a hundred.
Just glad he didn't take me with him. With out a doubt the luckiest two people here today..

He hasn't confirmed the rumour that the chap was engaged in a race against his own SLR McLaren Mercedes.
One would assume he would have seen the SLR as well.

Well - an eye witness says "no SLR around at the time"...

No. I've read the same reports, but I didn't see anyone else at the time of the crash that looked like he might have been racing the Enzo. And I would have noticed an SLR, I know what they look like. Maybe the SLR was way back, and showed up after. I left the scene about 15 min after the crash. (Don't let me hear anyone calling this an "accident" - this guy almost took me out.) I know we all like to joke about this, but this kind of behavior cannot be condoned. It's deadly. Please, folks - think about it.
