There is a very simple reason Porsche entered the SUV market: survival.
They are one of the few wolrd-renowned niche manufacturers that are independent, and their financial survival depended on a high-volume, high-margin vehicle. The Cayenne will outsell all other Porsche products combined. Combined with sharing development costs with VW, they will have high margins on this vehicle.
They would not have risked alienating the die-hard Porschephiles by producing an SUV if they did not HAVE to do so.
