PS3 120GB Hard Drive Upgrade
Well, I installed 1 120GB SATA drive into the PS3. (Pictures of the upgrade to follow later)
It was actually easier and quicker than upgrading a hard drive on a PC.
Step 1.) Buy 1 x $100 2.5" 120GB SATA Laptop Drive
Step 2.) Attach external FAT32 USB Harddrive to PS3
Step 3.) Use built int PS3 XMB Backup Utility to backup entire system (downloaded games, images and non-copyright protected videos and PS1/PS2 game saves are all backed up)
Step 4.) Power down PS3 and remove current internal harddrive following the steps on page 17 of the manual (it involves, opening a face plate, undoing a set screw, pulling out the drive tray and undoing 4 screws)
Step 5.) Attache new hard drive to tray, and snap back inplace - replace set screw and clip face plate back on.
Step 6.) Power up PS3, and follow in screen prompts to format new drive and re-initialize system.
Step 7.) Use the XMB PS3 Restore Utility to restore the backed up data to your newly installed.
Step 8.) Enjoy your 111GB of usable space
I am still trying to figure out how to back up my XBox360 data, let alone try actually install a bigger hard drive.
Sony are the masters of Consumer Electronics...
BTW, does the XBox360 even support USB harddrives?

that would require apple being as friendly to upgrade, swap, game, use as the PC is... it is getting closer since apple no longer are using thier own internal componentry, but the same as everybody else LOL

Thats the thing - I am a Technology-Fanboy - but Micro$haft don't get it.... they are so determined to keep secrets, they designed the XBox360 around their needs, not mine.
I mean, is it even possible for me to backup the data on the XBox360?

If you want a bigger harddrive for your 360 wait a few months and buy the 120(?) gig HDD that is going to be released.

Thats the point - why should I have to "wait for the special M$ XBox360-approved" anything?
And what about my exisitng settings and downloads and game saves?
I find it very amusing that all the PC-fans who praise the "independant upgradability" as the storng point of a the PC, somehow forget that the XBox360 locks you into a very expensive limited list of approved "peripherals".
Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough - the entire harddrive upgrade process is approved, supported and encouraged by Sony - not frowned upon, or limtied or controlled in any way shape or form.
The upgrade drive was an off the shelf 2.5" SATA drive - the backup device I used was a USB "external" drive I made myself using a $30 USB enclosure and an old 40GB EIDE drive.
The "homemade" USB drive was recognized as a valid storage source by the PS3, and I used a built in utility to make a backup image of the data - then after the upgrade ALL my custom data was restored.
There was no need to wait for a special "approved release" or special hack or anything else needed.
You don't need to be a Sony a FanBoy to appreciatethe simplicity and excellence of the product and excercise - you only have to be an Xbox360 FanBoy to not see it
BTW - good luck on the HD-content Games thing with the XBox360

Yeah I know what you mean. Well like the new MacBook laptops these now have user upgradability just like the PS3. Pop out the battery and slide out the tray.

Likewise, I love gadgets too. But I never hated on Sony as much as you . (Do I need to dig up old post? ) I see what you mean though.

5,400rpm - 7200rpm drives are still about $100 more for the same size.

Ya thats alot of money man. I'm glad I got a few HDD's lying around along with some Notebook HDD's although I dont think any are SATA.
Also I dont think you will notice much performance differences with 5400-7200 if you use the PS3 for regular use such as save games, watch a few vids here and there and what not. But if you install Linux then I am sure you will see some gain. But we go back to that toaster theory of yours so you did the rite thing with the 5400 RPM drive! Also I dont know if you have seen those Seagates with like 15000 RPM and 100 something gigs 2.5" drives. It sounds great but price wise...I dunno.
