Default Saleen S5S Raptor concept car

Coinciding with the launch of its new SMS Limited brand, sports car manufacturer Saleen has unveiled a new supercar concept at today’s New York Auto Show that boasts a 650hp V8 engine running on ethanol. Already being touted as the successor to the current S7 flagship, the new car is still in the design phase and will only go into production if it receives enough interest from show goers.

The concept carries the name S5S Raptor and it features a mid-mounted supercharged 5.0L V8 engine that can burn either petrol or 85% ethanol blended fuels. This engine develops a massive 650hp and 630 lb-ft of torque. The sprint to 60mph takes just 3.2 seconds and top speed is an estimated 200mph.

Other features include a lightweight aluminum chassis and composite body and a six-speed manual transmission sending drive to the rear wheels.

Stopping performance is guaranteed through the use of massive brake rotors measuring 15” (381mm) in the front and 13” (308mm) in the rear. Road holding traction is provided by the 275/35 ZR20 and 315/35/ZR20 Pirelli Rosso tires that wrap the 20” forged aluminum front and rear wheels respectively.

As this image reveals, the new concept is just as aggressive as the current mid-engined S7 supercar but it will be priced much lower than the $600,000 flagship if it were to enter production. If given the green light, Saleen claims the car could be in showrooms within two years with a price tag of $185,000.

??? Why did you title it the S56?

Anyways, I like it. An angry little thing. It's got more power than I expected. I wonder how much it'll cost?

the nose is too japanese and boring.... rear arches don't do much for me... overall, a bit R8'ish in the cabin...

Looks great.. where the S7 was a brutal looking car, this new Saleen is damn sexy with its flowing female like curves.

asthetically, it looks rather boring... too Japanese, and not individual enough up front.
the cabin looks too Audi R8.... the rear looks a bit mazda-ish...

the grill is likely the worst part.... I hate the non-painted grill... looks amature at best

Hmm. Now that I look at it. It does look too exaggerated, especially this probably isn't just a concept.
It doesn't look too bad though. And no one would ever mistake it for anything else.

but they'd have no idea what it is...

It doesn't look "Saleen"
It doesn't look brutal
It doesn't look like it will stand out
It looks forgettable .... needs the bright paint to stand out...

I gotta agree with you on that point. It doesn't look brutal at all. That gaping mouth (too much), and those boomerang lights (too funky) don't help. Curvy lines make it worse.

What I'm really wondering is if Saleen can really profit from selling $200,000 cars? I mean, it does business doing $80,000 Mustangs, so...

Right now I'm very biased against anything from the Saleen-less Saleen brand. This is mostly because they've all but completely dumped their operations in Irvine, CA. I'll wait until this becomes an actual production car with real test figures before I come to a conclusion on it.

I think Saleen forgot the definition of a 'supercar'!

It's supposed to be a light midengined 650 hp car that costs about 200k . . . what more must it do to qualify???

At any rate, the car you see at the show is nothing more than a big clay model, so we'll see how things turn out later.
