For what reason?

It's pretty strange to kill off something that's practically a part of UK culture.

What I heard is that the BBC feels Top of the Tops has become obsolete with all these music channels around (MTV et al).

That strikes me as odd. Firstly, because those music channels have been around for ages. Secondly, because the music channels rarely show bands playing live and thirdly because 'music' channels seem to be broadcasting more and more lame scripted adolescent crap programmes instead of music.

It has been moved around in the schedules, facelifted and revamped many times in the last few years as channels such as MTV etc. are proving tough competition.

Indeed, Toronto, there has been lots of talk/reminiscing over Top Of The Pops, but there is only so much you can do to stop a ship sinking.

It is the end of an era, for sure, but i feel its way overdue. TOTP should have shut down ages ago, when it was still popular. Now, it isn't part of the culture for kids growing up, and so has no future.

^^^ i agree,it should have been stopped a few years back, there was a time back then when people made time to watch it and everyone knew it was on,but over the past couple years i honestly have had no idea when its been on,i did watch the one hosted by jeremy clarkson though, lol that was funny especially when he told the band who played live that it sounded dreadfull, lol

Point being that TOTP was a national institution of sorts that had run for what seemed like forever. It was also one of the pioneering music programmes before the MTV-generation.

Not that i care that it's gone - it was an embarrasment these past few years. Dead on its feet.

Live like Iron Maiden?

It's been around since... I dunno... the 60's? Maybe even the mid-50's. Plus it's a weekly show, and usually, whoever is number one plays live at the ToTP studio, whether it be Oasis, Madonna, or Elton John.

I loathe Iron Maiden, but yes, it's live like that.

My parents watched it whilst in university over there. I think I've seen an episode of it. I thought it was really boring, to be honest.
