Default Thrust SSC = amazing

I'm sure you've heard of this record holding beast which hit 763+mph. 0-100mph in 4 seconds! 0-600mph in 16 seconds and powered by a couple of Rolls-Royce jet engines. Hell it's basically a fighter plane without wings. What's your opinion on it?

this story is really old. i think around 97.

anyway its really cool. imagine seeing this standing at the lights next to a mclaren.
the 2 rolls royce engines it uses are taken from the Royal Navy Phantom fighter bomber.
..."it has the equivalent power of 1000 Ford Escorts, or 145 Formula One cars"...

i love Turbine engines
im in love with SCRAMJET engines (no moving parts, requires post supersonic speeds to work [sorta])
can you imagine a land speed record above 5000 mph? i cant fathom it... to much friction, not exotic enough materials... but ive been wrong before

arent scremjet engines still concept to be used in new space craft..
i dont know if its actually possible to build one, cos i read about it in pop science and the whole thing sounded very imaginery

its really cool but i would have had bredlove break the sound barrier first, i thought his car was much pretier looking

All to so wiv the different properties of supersonic flow through a nozzle aint it, cus wiv supersonic flow, the nozzle actually has to be divergent to accelerate the flow. We've only just dun this in thermo, so i dont know a lot, go easy!

well ame, scramjets are far from imaginary. being an aero engineering major; i have great fascination with hi-tech, super high speed transportation. let me be the first to say that pop science is just that, popular. it isnt nessesarily a good source of technological developments. its pages are marked to sell, not to inform.
as far as what makes the SCramjet, or Supersonic Combustable ramjet engine real is several things, some of which im not supposed to talk about  Think SR-71....there are some other seclusive, and a few public research vehicles in existance, and perhaps production. there is a test path flown from the east seabord of the US to a military base in Brittan that is known to have experimental aircraft rocketing past ... everything...
some of the problems associated with scramjets is the sonic boom traversing through the combustion chamber. to aleviate this, engineers have developed one meathod to use the sonic boom to their advantage using a process called pulse detonation wave augmentation. and im sorry to call that the combustion chamber, as it would be in a normal ramjet, but it is rather just a feul control mechanism, the detionation happens entirely ouside the engine! it is a controled afterburn for maximum thrust, as well as maximum economy (liter/hours).
for those who dont know what ramjet is, it is a meathod of slowing air flow below the sound barrier, while compressing it for greater propulsion.
think of all the thermal energy produced when (thin) air is slamming into an aircraft at 5000+mph.... whoa ...
i have a little powerpoint slide show i made a few years ago explaining the basics of hypersonic flight if anybody would like it

thanks nthfinity thats some really valuable info u posted. I would like like to see the slideshow if its ok. Im really interested in aircraft and mechanical stuff.

I wanted to go study aerospace engineering in canada, but i didn't cos i knew there would be no jobs for that speciallization in the middle east (since im from there.)

Do u know about the aurora, the replacement for the Sr71 blackbird. it's probably in use by now and not a just a concept anymore.
anyway i'd like to see the slide show plz.

aerospace is more then just working with aircraft... much of my schooling is/will invovle a great many of the same classes as Mechanical Engineering majors. the auto industry is having a greater need for aero specialists as well. heck; anything in thurmo can be done to... well, just about.
as far as the "aurora" the history of that is a budget mishap that shouldn't have appeared. i do believe the project had reached completion of several full test vehicles around 1995. but i am still quite skeptical that it even exists as what people think it is... 80's-90s developmental replacement to the Blackbird.
since the late 70's, strange radar blips have been seen in airplanes equiped with radar traversing "well above" any conventional aircraft. and being the SR was developed laregly in the late 50's, and used primarily in the 60s to the early 70s, it is QUITE dated. im not saying that it isnt my fav. aircraft of all time tho.
any reason for us not knowing about hypersonic aircraft's abilities lies in the fact they arent popular like a fighterjet, and if we have the best, why should we tell what it is (bluffing game) . highspeed craft cant manuver worth shit.
with structural integrety of aircraft moving at those speeds; exotic polymer metal blends burn, which is why titanium is still the perfered meathod of hypercraft skin. ive read of several instances of using liquid nitrogen as a coolent for the skin to keep it from fracturing.
the way the SR did this was through expansion zones. when the aircraft is upto speed, it is a full ...11" or 18" wider. when at rest, and cooled down, it leaks like a baby w/out a diaper. this is why it immediately refuels

The Aurora is probably in 'use' already. Where as use can be anything, such as testing.

Anyways I cannot get this insanely stupid .rm video format that someone apparently has of the Aurora in flight. Every place that has this file is a .rm file. What in the hell is a .rm?

http://www.firstscience.com/site/articles/aurora.asp

The download is at the bottom of the page.

the donuts on a roap contrails they speak of in the article is nothing new... and been studied for over 25 years. this is the Pulse detonation wave augmentation i spoke of earlier. very intruiging propulsion
it almost appears to be a rocket more then an air breathing plane tho... hard to say as the quality is low

First I would like to say go AAE. Second the team that made that car pisses me off they claim to be their first to do the speed of sound on land but they were the second. They were first to do it with 4 wheels ( which is bs cus 2 of their wheel are setup bicycle style). The first to ever do it was some budweiser car i think with 3 wheels.
