Default O/S not recognising memory key...

Got a 512 MB usb 2.0 pen drive, and put in the comp, it says yeah that disk is ready to use, but when u go to My Computer, there are two icons there, one of a removable disk and one of a floppy(comp doesnt have floppy otherwise). and when i double click the removable disk icon, it says Insert Disk into drive, and doesnt recognise it.

However, when i double click the floppy icon, it lets me store shit into that, but only 1.38 MB, which is the capacity for a floppy disk drive.

I am using Win XP, and i dont have service pack 2 installed. Could this be a problem ? Or should i return the mem key back ? I have used other pen drives of USB 2.0 (upto 128MB) before on the comp and they work. So am confused as to why this doesnt.

As far as I know, some pen thingies work for SP2 and not for others. If you can still return it and dont want to upgrade to SP2 then yeah change it. Try it on a machine with SP2 and see if it works.

Every version of windows (except for win95/98) comes with built-in driver that works with virtually all usb flash drives. Even for my mp3 player one, it works right away.

Did you plug it into your front usb port or the one at the back? Sometimes I find the front usb ports of lower quality cases a little bit unstable for certain devices, like my steering wheel for instance.

Go into Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, see if the drive is being detected. I had problem with a certain usb drive before when its default drive letter was in used by something else. Very strange problem, was expecting windows to automatically pick a diff one

Good luck!

AlienDB7, I have plugged it in the usb ports in a desktop computer and also my laptop, which has only one usb slot. All give me the same problem. Service Pack 2 isnt installed on any, as i dont really want it.

I did the disk management thing that u told me to do, and well there, it has Disk 0 as my HDD, Disk 2 as the CD ROM, and Disk 1 as the Removable Media. But it doesnt give the mapping of it, just says No Media. SO it isnt recognising that it is there or not.

Doubt the lack of SP2 is the problem.

Under disk management, try to right click on the removable drive and select "Edit" to change the drive letter. If it still doesn't work, can you post a screen shot of the properties screen so we can get a better idea of what's going on.

Hope this helps.

I was able to change the letter of the drive from D: to H:

The properties shows that everything is working properly, but still doesnt recognise that the drive is there.

Attached is the screenshot.
Thanks

Looks like your USB drive is rather different. Found the manual for your drive at http://www.dane-elec.fr/home/libloca...son/UDPv20.pdf

It's supposed to have 2 modes, floppy mode and HDD mode. Just follow the instruction in the manual and you should be able to get it working.

It says in the manual about some security program. I cant locate that program on the USB at all....!! I double click the floppy icon and it has nothing inside it.

So i guess i will try to look for this program in the net somewhere, and see where that leads me.

Doesnt say how to switch from one mode to the other in the file though.>!!

Thanks for ur help.
