OK since this started in another topic sort of I thought I would pose the question.
Where did you learn to drive officialy? Did you go to driver's ed? through school or private business?
What kind of car/cars did they have? Transmissions? Was it required by the law?
And finally how old were you when you got your license?

I went to Driver's Ed through my School.
We had all brand new vehicles each year. An SVT Focus 5-door, 3 Taurus' and an Explorer.

I went to driver's ed through my high school, in Michigan we're allowed to start taking driver's ed at 14years and 9 months, but my parents didn't let me start until I was almost 16 (probably a wise decision hehe). We had an Oldsmobile Achieva, several Chevrolet Cavalier 4-doors and a Pontiac Grand Am, all of them were automatic transmission vehicles with a second brake pedal in the front-passenger footwell. It was required by law in order for me to get my learner's permit and begin driving on the road. I finally got my stage 2 license (which meant I could drive alone until midnight, but after that I needed a parent in the car) when I was 17 years old and I got my full license 3 days before I turned 18.

i went through school. we had a pair of "tore-asses" that with 4 people in them were pigs :roll: and they were automatics. it wasn't required by law in WA, but if you didn't want to wait until you were 18 to get your license, you had to do it.
i was 16.75 when i got my license. had to teach myself to drive a stick when i got my Z running. i was 18 then.

first car i ever drove was a '91 Ford F150 with a 5-speed manual, that was about age 13.

Went to formal driving school at a private business at age 15, all they had were tiny crappy auto corollas.

Learned how to drive stick on a '95 F350 and a '96 Maxima with my dad as teacher.

i learnt to drive when i was 8 on my dada farm, but still im not old enough to drive on the road legally :@

anyways my first car was a Mk3 escort 1.9

My uncle learned my to drive a car at the age of 15 or 16, but that were only the basics. When I was old enough to go for my driver's license (18 years old) I went to a driving school (not obligatory in Belgium -> see thamar's example). And then had some practise time for 6 months (learning permit) under the supervision of my parents.

Everything with manual of course. Your not allowed to drive a manual over here if you didn't do your driving exam with a manual.

Need For speed 1 and 2 on the Saturn and PSX with a sterring wheel, paid off in drivers-ed lol

Drivers-ed in Maryland, age 17, reg by state if your not 21.
SOme green 4-door Honda or some thing, 4 speed auto.
Driver Licens in VA at 17

Bitch failed me in MD during the drivers test becuase i did not stop at a stop sign that i had been sitting at for 30min waiting for the course to clear so i could go on!
So went to VA, took there test drove around the city and got my Licence in 20min lol that'll teach her to fail me!

I got my permit at 15 and my parents taught me everything I needed to know so that I could take the driving test at 16. I had experience driving from my racing experience. Got my racing license.

Got my licence when I was 16 as well. Went through driving school to learn the basics (on a beat up old Toyota Corolla) of a manual. First car after passing the test was a Mazda 626.

Driving school never really teaches you anything that you couldn't have leared from a parent. Driving school will only teach you antiquated techniques (i.e. hands at 10 and 2) needed to pass the driving test, but not how to effectively and properly drive on the road.

Experience taught me that.

If you don't hold the steering wheel at 9 and 3, then you will never know what proper driving is...

Ever wondered why F1, DTM, and Le Mans drivers use squarish steering wheels and put their hands at 9 and 3? Exactly.

I got my license through a driving school when I was 18yo, I did about 15hrs of on-road driving in a manual Ford Laser.

I also drove my neighbours (very generous guy) manual Holden Astra in between the lessons, as my parents car was an auto.

I have since completed an advanced driving course, where we drove MR2 Spyders which had paddle-shift gearboxes.....that was good fun.

Been driving for like 10 years. Licence was aquired 2 years ago.

through drivers ed. car was almera 1.6 diesel from 2000 something. driving licence cost me all together appprox 350 EUR. now it is much more expencive.. something like 600 EUR or so.

Learned to drive using three cars: Ford Focus (driving school), Ford Explorer, Pontiac Bonneville SSEi. I learned to drive standard, and currently drive an '01 Z3 3.0i

I drove a Mazda Premacy diesel, it was a nightmare.
25 lessons and â‚¬1800,- later i got my driving license at 18 year (Februari 2004) and all the cars where manual
