Default Cool, cheap night vision goggles!

I was watching a news channel on TV and the CEO of Toys R Us was on showing what could be hot this Christmas. He showed these night vision goggles that can be purchased for $70.

Now I know these are not mil-spec grade stuff, the ones that I wanted to buy are like $2000 and up. But if they work as advertised, cool. I have a large backyard area that is almost pitch black dark, having these would be cool to scan those areas. Ok- they would be cool to play with.
The link for the eyeclops site is here.

hmmm if they did not have that stupid red light, you could ummm... turn off your lights at night as you creep down the street, hehehe... not to mention turn off lights as cops try to follow you then do the ghost escape like in that wildest police chase video

What is with the red LEDs? Looks a bit pretentious, and for $70, probably not very good. Not for me.

Those LED's are lights you can use if you need further illumination. As far as being not very good, we shall see; time for me to get myself a Christmas present.

the red LEDs are just there so that other people can see you, it looks like the main IR source is the large red light in the middle.

i'm sure you could disable the red LEDs with some soldering and pying that thing apart

I've actually looked into buying night vision gear and I know for a fact that the red LED is so that the device can have a light source to work with. The military stuff doesn't have the light and is why they cost a few grand as opposed to few hundred bucks. haha, I just re-read silentm's post and he's correct.
