Ex-Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle believes that Michael Schumacher has lost his edge and is no longer the ultimate racer. Brundle thinks that this difficult year has really effected Schumacher for the worse. Here is what Martin had to say:

"At times this year, Schumacher has looked as though the trials and setbacks of the season have robbed him of some energy.

To my surprise he appeared to lack commitment and confidence. It's the first time I can recall him looking ordinary. The most extraordinary reign in F1 history is probably over."

i, however dont see this as completely true.
i offer this as from several facts:
Schumacher is consistantly much faster/higher on the grid then Rubens, who just last year was the second fastest, and sometimes the fastest on the grid.

his ability to pass is still huge, but after the top runners have warmed up their michilins, those passing manuvers are taken back.

even with a worse car then the top runners, he is still lapping extremely cleanly, and is often pushing for further position right til the end

i can cirtainly sympathise that he is extremely fustrated, and w/out a 'legitimate' win, it cant be without emotions.

if ferrari's v8+chassis is competitive, im very sure he will come back on top quite regularly

No other driver on the grid this year would have been able to do what he did with the material he has.

well you go from being untouchable in 04 to not being a factor in 05. Yeah, that's going to humble you a little bit. But if the new car can give him the confidence that Ferrari is still competitive, he'll bounce back next year

i think the setbacks will make him more determined next year. he's been in this situation before, so he knows what to do. i think some people have forgotten how bad it was in 1996 and all the disspointments in 1997-1999.

its there worst season in 7 years n they still finish 3rd mainly due to MS

He'd able to keep kimi and alonso (which is 2sec faster) behind him for quite a few laps, that said something.

i dont think they were actually faster at that point... in watching the camera view looking behind schumacher when Kimi was behind, kimi was right there some of the time, but then clearly schumacher was pulling away before the first pit.

i think his tires were offering more grip for the first 1/2- 2/3 of the race, which is why kimi couldn't even get a passing manuver in there... afterward, it became much 'easier' for alanso/kimi to pass him.

just looking at the lap times, thats what it looked like to me

In the first few laps, I agree with you. The tyres were working well at that stage and he was faster the Kimi, at least.

But after 9/10 laps or more (can't quite remember) he was very slow... The tyres gave up pretty soon and weren't consistent at all. And by the time both Kimi and Alonso catched up him, they were much faster, me thinks.

Just look at Alonso, when he first passed him; he "disappeared" right away. Then he lost a lot of time behind I don't know who...

About the side discussion about Germany regarding Michael's pace vis-a-vis Alonso and Kimi ... Michael reported that he was driving a car with extra downforce as they had anticipated rain in the race. Thus he was a sitting duck on the straights.

It was remarkable driving by Michael to keep Alonso behind for so many laps. He was overtaken along the main straight and 130R after a longish straight as can be expected.

As far as the main topic goes - Michael has driven remarkably well this year with only one critical mistake during qualifying in Imola. Otherwise it was usually the tires letting him down and not any personal driver errors. He was quicker than Barrichello all year round. So his raw speed is there.

Also the passion he shows fighting for the lower points position indicates that the fire burning inside him to excel and push the limits still burns bright.

As for next year, Michael will be fast as usual. But my speculation is that if Ferrari proves to be a dud like this year then I am sure he will quit at the end of 2006. I am sure he will be want to give it his all before he leaves for good.

I think those are pretty stupid comments commin from someone like Brundle. With what he had he did awesome, look at Hungary and Imola when their tyres performed alrite look what he did, he dominates for so long and all of a sudden one season comes and everyone knows their tyres suck and the car might not of been great either, but still its MS that is losing it? ppl like that shouldnt even talk about racing they obviously know nothing.

Im relatively new to this sport but from what ive seen it almost looks like schumi is bored.

Have you ever been the best in your area at something that beating your competition just isnt fun anymore. He seemed so far in front of his comp in the previous season mabey this is a slump hes in?
