Muscle Car Insurance
Hey, For my first car I really wanted to buy a 87-89 5.0L Mustang. They sound so amazing, they can be super fast very easily, and they are cheap. The only catch is that my friend tells me they will cost me $900/month in insurrance. I deffinitely cannot afford $10,000+ a year to insure a car, but I really want to get something with some performance thats under $5000, and affordable to insure. Does anyone know anything about insurance rates on these cars? At www.kanetix.com I got some quotes and it seemed to be affordable if I put the stang under my dads name and put his 92' Accord under mine instead, but I dont know how reliable either of my sources are because the site said $6500/year for me to insure the car (as oppose to $10k). If you know anything about rates Id really appreciate it, or if you have advice that would be awesome. thanx

Try getting just liability or liability and comprehensive. That should knock it down.
Also if your not driving much you can set a mile limit and theyll decrease for that too.
Finally, if its a true classic there is muscle car insurance, however this is pricey and thus not what you want.
To give you an idea my 88 iroc 350 costs 500 a year.
The 900 dollars a month though your friends giving you is complete bs though.
A 2002 Camaro would only cost me 2200 a year to insure. This veries by area, but Id say itll be between 1000-2000 a year for full coverage and sub 1000 if you get just liability.

This is good news. Im willing to pay about $3500/year to insure something. I think the best way to go about it is to get my dads car under my name (probably about $2-3k a year) and put the stang under my dads. Then I'd just have to pay the difference between the stang and the honda to keep him happy. I think I *might be able to swing it. Anyone else have any info? p.s thanx graywolf, ur making my happier with every word you type. lol

Im looking at some Auto trader stangs, and judging from the comments I dont know if I will be able to afford it again. LOL heres 2 comments that are particularily dissapointing:
Comment: 5.0L, 5 spd., super clean, black on grey. '85 GT interior, performance mods, too many to list. Consider trades for car cheaper on insurance. 208,536 km. $4000 obo
Comment: 5.0L, has engine from 89 (5.0L HO) can't afford insurance, must go! Power windows, locks, steering etc. Call now 168,468 km. $2,000.
Can anyone give me some price estimates? I work at McDonalds (lol) so I dont make much cash, and it seems the US prices are a lot lower than Canadian, especially for new drivers. I could be wrong.

Oh well, One thing I guess I have to remember is that your cash isn't worth anywhere near as much as ours.
Still think that numbers way to high though. As I said, I was quoted by state farm 2200 a year for a 2002 SS. That was still too much for me, but in the US it definitly wouldn't be that much. I'm only 22 and you wouldn't think Canada would be that bad.
Oh well
As I said, consider limiting to liability and limiting your miles to lower your charges.
A late 80s car isn't all that fast compared to whats out there now(Its more sporty then a v6 mustang, but a new v8 it's not), and its not worth that much. That generally drives insurance down.

One suggestion, try looking for a early 90s camaro b4c car(aka the camaro cop car). It registers as a v6 for insurance but it is a 305. While not necessarily blazing (its not a 350 car), the car will handle well and still have somewhat of a look to it. Even better with a 98 b4c, they think the ls1 is a v6

No, you need to search out a car thats b4c specifically. Its not rated as a z28, thats why it cuts down the insurance fees. Because it is a Camaro rather then a z28 camaro it gets the same insurance as the v6 camaro rather then the v8 z28. Or in case of 91 and 92 it apparently gets the same insurance as a 305 with a 350. 305 should be way cheaper insurance then the 350.
They are harder to find and were camaro cop cars. Some cars apparently had 350s as well. That I didn't know.

First off, easy on my 88 race car.
Second off, the ta wasnt available in b4c trim, so that doesn't help him much.

Hemi_fan, why the f... would you want to drive a stang in the snow? That's gonna be your first ride too?! I sincerly hope they`ll charge so much you won't be able to have a performance car until your over 25!! No pun intended, I'm pretty much sure you understand. By the way you should save your $ for a appartment then a cheap car but for that you must get into managing, then a cheap house, then some performance car but for that you must own a franchise, then a nice place, then a girl but for that you must get diamonds by that time your (way) over 30...so chill your only half way there and theres no way any1 will let you jump start, there would be too many jealous :roll:

Answer... I love cars... and I cant see myself driving a vehicle that i dont enjoy. its just not me. I know its totally impractical... but none of it matters one bit to me

I Don't know how much a Stang would be but My 95 T-Bird with the 4.6L V-8 and the performance package (thats all they know about) is about 350 with a good student discount. But all our cars cost about 800 last time I checked (6 total Camaro not for the road) thats just for me.
