I've had pretty good luck with used car lots, but you need to get them independently inspected before a purchase. With my Celica, the lot owner let me take the car to any mechanic place I wanted to have it checked out.
If you're dumb enough to buy a used car based on what the owners or car lot say, you get what's coming to you and are far too trusting of people. There are exceptions to this, of course, but it's still a good plan to verify their claims with a mechanic you trust.

yeah car fax and the magnet test, you take a magnet and a piece of paper and run it along the car (magnet on top of paper which is on the car) and its the magnet falls (your pulling the paper) their is body work.
