Actually it's not related at all. The story in "Awakenings" centers around an outbreak of a disease which caused a form of encephalitis which left dozens of people in a catatonic state, essentially suffering from palsy-esque symptoms, except in the end the tremors became so rapid that the patients' muscles appeared to freeze in place...they were still conscious and aware of their surroundings though...
