PSP software help...

OK I finally bit the bullet and bought a PSP yesterday and for some reason they don't give you any software for transfering things from the PC to the PSP.
Does anybody know any free or cheap software that can encode and transfer video files for the PSP since it uses a special version of MP4 I tried just regular MP4 and it doesn't work so I went to Sony's website and they said it's a proprietary version needed for the Memory Stick Pro media they sell a program for $15 but I was hopeing there was another solution available.
I know there probably aren't too many people here with a PSP but I have been searching the web high and low and can't really find anything good.
