laser jamming - does this really work?

I'm sure 5th gear did an item on this, and other ways to beat speed camera's/guns in general.. someone round here has that video and can tell the results

Jeremy beat the speed camera at about 170 mph. I think he did it in a TVR Cerbera.

and maybe there's a top gear one too ?

anyway, my dad wants to buy one so I'm looking for good info on whats best to buy

Its on sleepy fish: not sure about the quality, check gtrcental aswell it might be there dunno about racing flix

basically the jammers are needed for mobile ones as they gve you time to slow to the speed limit and the gps ones if kept up to date are the best for fixed cameras i believe

Car and Driver did a study on beating laser detectors years ago and found out that if you drive around with your highbeams on, the light can reduce the effective range of the laser gun by a large amount. Maybe not really feasable to do, but just thought I would let you know.

let me be the first to recomend the passport 8500. great range, and great laser/x band, k band, Ka band.....and a new form of k which does in-accurate hits, then an accurate one.

jammers are illeagle, and are easy for cops to pick out in the same way radar is friggin easy to home in on...

laser jammers flat out wont work! they go in a straight line! so unless you know the angle nessisary to the source, you are outta luck... interesting on the high beam thing...

I'm not convinced that they don't work i've just re-watched the 5th gear program and basically they had a laser gun like the ones used by the police over here and the device gave a warning and allowed tiff to slow down to the speed limit and only after a period of time did the detector clock his speed so they hopefully wouldn't raise to many suspicions

As for being illegal well its a bit dodgy but they are the same as the devices used to open automatic garage doors, o.k. if you get pulled up you have to prove that you have a legitimate use for the product (i believe it can also be used to switch on exterior lights- much cheaper )

A laser or radar?

Laser is a line of sight device... unless the fired laser beam directly hits the jammer, it will have no way fo returning the required light frequency to provide a "false reading"

Sounds like you are describing a radar jammer.

The problem with a radar jammer is that the cop operating the radar gun will hear the jammers signal - and KNOW that his gun is being jammed..

laser detectors do work, i can personally assure you that, specifically regarding the passport 8500.

most companies that offer radar jammers, since they are illegal in the US, they dont actually work. i can say that i have actually built a waveguid attached to a 9volt batery, which operates in the range of K band radar... interesting results

unless you have a 3 year old operating the garage door opener, why would it be used on the road

im just saying laser jamers really dont work, not reliably anway...

On 5TH Gear they showed the error message that came up and said it doesn't always mean a jammer is being used, the jammer switchs off after a certain time and allows the car to be clocked- hopefully now doing the limit if you want to see what i mean go to sleepy fish and download the feature as i doubt my discription is as clear as my words

yeah i'm just going by the 5th gear program as far as the jammers are concerned i don't know anyone with a jammer! As for detectors perhaps some are better than others but i know people who despite having a detector have been caught more than once by mobile cameras, both of them said the detector didn't warn them in time to slow down and both were very annoyed!!!

in my area, and most of the US, we dont have speed cameras... i think it would be kinda dificult to detect if it uses radar, like most speed guns if the radar is pointed the direction traffic is moving... of course, radar does bounce off the cars in the opposing direction at a red shifted movemnt (slightly lower frequency)
