Thanks for posting this mate.. Praying mantis is the style of Kung Fu i'm learning, and according to legend this is how the style was developed, in a fight between a mantis and a bird.
Never saw a pic of the 'finished product' though!

Spiders are incredibly crafty. The Trap Door spider covers the ground in non-stick webs, digs out a hole and lines it with the sticky stuff and then pulls a large rock over it leaving only it's leg on one of the webs outside so that it can feel bugs walking in front of it. Once they get close......

yeah, nature has a way of surprising even its most adapted species. us humans.

but its funny how the better we get at dealing with millions of new issues presented to us everyday.. we seem to lose our capability of doing one thing well as this mantis has so willingly demonstrated for us here.

No kidding. Just look at our pets. Seriously, who trained who here? We train the dog not to shit in the house. Now it barks at the door so that we'll let it out.
My bird throws his toy off the cage and i pick it back up for him so he can do it again..

Once they get close...... aww, maybe it was this one then. the guy did mention something about the spider staying in contact with the web to sense when something was passing over. but the name doesnt sound familiar. oh well, they seem to be doing the same thing.

The kill method you described sound much different. Plus, bird eating spiders are much bigger than this trap door spider. I think the TD is only about as big as an average Wolf Spider.

Ronin, most spiders use that web sensing trick. There are only a few i can think of that dont. The most obvious being the common jumping spider and the water spider.

It's something like that. You're also never more than 8 feet from a spider at any given time
