Top Gear Australia - S2 EP2 - 18th May, 2009 - Discussion
With car owners forced to suffer high petrol prices and the environmental impact of cars now more a concern, Australians have responded to these issues the best way they could – by buying more V8s in 2008 than ever before.
So for those happy to sell their first-born to pay for petrol and think the greenhouse effect is the latest diet craze out of the States, Top Gear Australia has the car for you – the HSV Clubsport R8.
“Basically it’s an SS Commodore that’s been to HSV boot camp and come back with a bigger engine, bigger brakes and a Schwarzenegger body pack,” said Steve Pizzati.
Want something better? Top Gear Australia has uncovered Australia’s best kept performance car secret. The Holden Special Vehicle’s Clubsport R8 by Walkinshaw Performance or affectionately known around the Top Gear Australia office. The Superclubby.
“Buying a superclubby is like ordering a pizza. You choose the toppings you like and you can get them to hold the anchovies,” said Steve.
While Australians have to wait another 12 months before the first electric car is unleashed on our shores, Top Gear Australia decide to build their own low cost electric car from existing petrol powered ones. Armed with $3000 each, Warren and Steve take their iconic Australian car of choice into the garage for a power make-over before they battle it out on the track in true Top Gear Australia fashion.
Legendary Australian rocker, Ian Moss (Cold Chisel) is the Star in the Bog Standard Car and Warren and James race in reverse around the track – for science of course.
