Vehicle tax for registration based on engine displacement... in the USA!

I was really hoping to find this false on snopes.

What?!?! Washington, eh? I should've known.

I'm going to be sick.

A vehicle engine displacement fee must be paid and collected
8 annually for motor vehicles subject to the fee under RCW 46.16.0621,
9 except motor homes. The amount of the fee must be based upon the
10 vehicle engine size in liters, which is correlated with vehicle size
11 and vehicle emissions. The fee imposed under this section must be used
12 for transportation purposes, and may not be used for the general
13 support of state government. The vehicle engine displacement fee is
14 that portion of the fee, as reflected on the engine size in liters set
15 forth in the schedule provided in this section, that is in excess of
16 the fees imposed under RCW 46.16.0621 and 46.17.010. For vehicles
17 registered on or after January 1, 2009, the vehicle engine displacement
18 fee under this section is due at the time of initial vehicle

19 registration and any subsequent renewal of vehicle registration.

That'd tempt me to bore and stroke out my engine as much as possible just to get away with a bit more . . . I've always wanted to try the 447 ci small block Oldsmobile thing . . . all I need is a crank out of a 425 and the proper connecting rods . . . 7.3 litres for the government tax of only 6.6 litres.

Eh, when I drop a V8 in my Fiero those DMV idiots wont know the difference. When I bought the car it hadnt been registered in 4 years and was a salvage title with no pink slip so they had to do a visual inspection of the car.

The guy asked me to "open the hood", not see the engine, so I did. He stumbled around for over 5 minutes before he realized there wasnt an engine there.

Not one bit - Vipers are $90,000 cars that already carry a $4,000 or so Gas Guzzler tax.

I guess the humour wasn't conveyed as intended; hard when my girlfriend has been freaking out at me all morning. Guess you can expect that when you forget valentines day!

IMO, when you're spending 100k + on a car, the increase in fuel tax should even be a financial consideration. If it is a make or break point, you can't afford it.

Out of curiosity though - how much additional $$ would this add to say, a Viper?

Hehe - oops.. I wondered about the raz.

In Texas its a flat $65 a year license and registration fee so we are spoiled - But for some states, this registration suggested fee/tax is close to what they already as %age of value based regsitration fees. So as long as they didnt combine the 2.. hehe

This is already the case in Michigan, since our Liberal governator took office years ago.... it is based on the value of the car when "new" .... so one friend who doesn't have the means to register his car would have to pay $22,000 to drive it on the street....

That's just stupid. You should be charged a flat fee to register the car and perhaps a tax indexed to GVM so the govt can maintain roads. That's logical. There is no reason to have a displacement tax.

I think they increased our fee to 60 dollars every 2 years...

The only thing delaware is good for.. no sales tax.
