I do think that a ringlight creates a little flat lighting, good thing that you can individually adjust both half's of the Canon MR-14EX. Since the MR-14EX can function as a Master, have you tried using the 550EX with a softbox as a slave?
Oh, and out of curiosity, have you ever tried lighting a portrait with just the ringflash?
