Default 5th Gear - S12 EP7 - 15th October, 2007 - Discussion

The Caparo T1 is a £210,000 street-legal racer offering Formula One levels of performance. Extremely light and powerful, the car can accelerate to 100mph in under five seconds and corner at speeds unheard of in previous roadworthy cars. Jason Plato takes the Caparo to the track to give his view on the vehicle that redefines the word ‘extreme’.

Elsewhere in tonight’s programme, Jonny Smith and Tom Ford attempt to build their own ‘drift cars’ – specialised racing vehicles designed to tackle corners at high speeds by moving sideways. Beginning with some unlikely raw materials – namely a couple of Bedford Rascal vans costing just £600 each – the competitors have one day and a heap of scrap metal to make their modifications. The two drivers will then go head to head across a series of challenges to see who has created the better vehicle.

The Subaru Impreza has become a motoring legend since it was first introduced in 1993. The victor of many world rallies, it is admired, off-road and on, for its stunning performance and impeccable four-wheel-drive handling. Tiff Needell drives one of the most famous versions of the car, then compares it to the all-new Impreza to find out if the magic lives on.

Back in the 1970s, two highly successful American TV series featured cars that became stars in their own right – the red and white Gran Torino of ‘Starsky and Hutch’ fame, and the orange Dodge Charger from ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’. 30 years on, Vicki Butler-Henderson takes to the track to discover, once and for all, which of these two TV legends is quicker.
All in all it looks like a pretty good episode
