It loses a gear to the SMG. That has consequences in torque multiplication and being able to maintain the engine near peak power coming off of shifts. The SMG box also allows no-lift full throttle upshifts and combined with the automated gearchanges is likely to be quicker than most people can manage with a manual. (Also partly why the Tiptronic Turbo can be faster than the manual: with the gas pedal floored even through gearchanges, the turbos are always spooled.)

Shame about the electronics, but I'd imagine this M5 would still be an incredibly satisfying drive on most winding roads short of a 10/10ths pace. I'm not sure I'd pass up the SMG tranny though.
