As stated, the R8 is too quiet to hear over the Corvette's engine and is too low to really be seen over the hood. Racing helmets cut off a lot of peripheral vision so quick glances to the side don't always reveal everything that you would see normally. Added to the even more limited movement of your head put in place by the HANS device, and your blind spot ends up being most of the side of the car.
The Audi should have waited for a clearer opportunity, such as down a straight.
