i dont think they were actually faster at that point... in watching the camera view looking behind schumacher when Kimi was behind, kimi was right there some of the time, but then clearly schumacher was pulling away before the first pit.
i think his tires were offering more grip for the first 1/2- 2/3 of the race, which is why kimi couldn't even get a passing manuver in there... afterward, it became much 'easier' for alanso/kimi to pass him.
just looking at the lap times, thats what it looked like to me
