With many of the "free" (whatever definition they want to use) Linux programs available in Windows, there's really no need to use Linux for desktop. I'm running things from PHP and Apache to GIMP on my win2k box and I'm happy about the performance.
On the other hand, I do have couple of rarely used Linux machines in my room
