Ancient or modern rally cars?
Hi everybody.
Were ancient group B cars like the Delta S4 and others more spectacular than modern day 206's, Focus' and Impreza's? Was rallying more exciting? Tell me what you think. Personally, although I think 500hp cars (and more) made rallying very very interesting, nowadays cars can go faster on the same surfaces than before, making it also great to watch. By the way, which WRC car you think looks the best? My favourite is the Xsara in tarmac spec. |
i don't know which i prefer, really. the look and performance of the cars also had to do with the times, back then everything was so technologically subpar compared to now, so everything looked so crude and ugly. i like the beastly ones though, but i still prefer modern rally cars to the old ones. faster, lighter, prettier, all around better (and safer)
i have a bit of a different taste to most people and my opinion is that the peugeot 206 tarmac spec was/is the sexiest rally care EVER |
group B where much lighter than modern WRC... the only real improvements since then are in safety, suspension design and electronics
http://www.stormloader.com/groupb/comparison.html group B were brutal :D |
I'll take the modern WRC cars. a lot of the older cars arent that attractive to me (boxy, crude). newer rally cars are worlds better.
the best looking rally car is the 206. that little car is hot. the car looks funky in street form but the rally car is downright curvaceous |
Oh yes that was brutal but i didn't really watch a video on the group B except some actions so i don't know but it seems more spectacular ! But cars at 900 kg with 450 bhp what could it be else than spectacular !!!
In the moderns i like the Subaru and i think the future Citroen C4 will be nice too but the 206 ... :D so nice ! |
I actually like the older Group B cars. Sure handling was no where as good as modern WRC cars but that's what good about them. Drivers were always driving on the edge so it was more about skill than the car. If you don't know what I mean, just watch the famous Audi Quattro S1 video ;)

What was the Rally cars before Group B?Group N or A?
|
Exactly...the ancient group B cars where designed straight to get as maximum power as as possible, under as the lightest possible chassis regardless the car wasnt effective on times or not,.....whereas the current cars are thought straight for the efficiency of the cars at the end of a rally event..........as a result....the group B cars reactions where much more brutal (due to, apart from the horsepower of each car and the little weight of it, the size of the turbo, the non electronic aid on the differentials), and, in addition, the car tent to slide much more than the current WRC cars...i prefer the group B cars

Older rally cars were certainly 'boxyer' but more powerful, but since they have too be based on production models now I dont think will see the likes off RS200 cars or the like again, unless someone starts a new series with no limits.

It's the pretty Renault (although not made by renault) Alpine http://home.swipnet.se/~w-55301/thomas/motor/alpine.jpg |
group B was amazing, from what i have seen, but also very deadly
|
I prefer the new school rally cars the most they look soo much better than the older cars and with the modern drivetrains and other components the old schoolers don't stand a chance.

group b was the bomb! definitely one the best most exciting and technologically advanced eras in all of motorsports. unfortunately though, it was also one of the most dangerous.
