the official SHOW OFF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL thread

this is one of those interactive quicktime thingies with a view of my high school campus (some of it anyway)

http://kapalama.ksbe.edu/foodservices/akahivr.html

that's a view from the southwest corner of the 3rd floor of Akahi (the name of the building, which happens to be spelled wrong on the video) outside the dining hall. from that vantage point you can see the main campus road (one of two primary roads that runs through the campus) as well as the tennis complex, the tech buildings, Dr. Chun's house (the school president), a couple fields and various other buildings and features of the campus

in the distance starting from the right is the western range of the ko'olau mountains, to the left and inward a bit is pearl harbor (yes, that pearl harbor), to the left of that is the city of honolulu, the first big hill you see to the left is Punchbowl Crater, home of the veteran's cemetary, and in the far distance beyond that is the famous Diamon Head crater. i know the view looks cluttered but that's because it is. This is the view of Honolulu, mind you, which is rather overdeveloped (in my opinion). this isn't exactly the "Hawaii" you imagine in the brochures, nope, that's on the other islands :D

anywhore, if you got any questions just ask, and i'll try and take screen shots to elaborate or whatever

geekdiggy 04-02-2004 03:27 AM

to give you folks some perspective of the size of the campus:

the yellow circle is where this vid was taken from:

http://img38.photobucket.com/albums/...iggy/akahi.jpg

there you can see the high school campus, the intermediate campus, the elementary campus and the main road leading from the campus to the rest of the world

Neat. Hawaii is a pretty place.

For some reason, I went and searched for stuff from my old high school. All I found was pictures of the outside classroom. For whatever reason, it doesn't show anything. There is a pond with a big dock with a bunch of work tables. The only class that ever went out there was the Biology class, you just messed around with various bugs and plants. Occasionally, a different class would go out there on a nice day.

I can tell you one thing, it was remodeled when I was in 10th Grade, they forgot to put bathrooms in the cafeteria. :D

The outdoor classroom is in the back of the school, there isn't anything for at least 2 miles back there, just trees. It's about a 15 - 20 minute drive and I'm in St. Paul. A major highway splits my city in half.
I'm not entirely in the boondocks, but yes, there is quite a bit of open space. I'm sure LA is cool, but I like having lots of space and light traffic. For the most part anyway, certain parts have terrible traffic.
The city I'm in is growing fast, houses are going up everywhere. I mean big houses too. Just down the road from me, there is a new housing area. All of the houses (about 10 of them) are over $1 million! They are huge, with a private lake in the middle of all the houses.
There is another house that was just built down the road the opposite direction of the other ones. It's in a field (look at the pics I posted, imagine that surrounding a house) It's freaking massive. I haven't a clue as to how much it costs, but I'm willing to bet it was well over $1million. They have a huge yellow " Do not tresspass" sign on the gate.

Almost the entire southern end of my city and county are farm fields. Sadly it seems to be changing.

LOL I didnt mean to call you a country bumpkin or anything. I just wish there was some open space around here within a reasonable distance. Shit sometimes it takes over an hour to travel less than 10 miles at the wrong time. Its a love/hate relationship I have with LA. I love the fact that its almost always good weather, its 15 mins to the beach, less then an hour to the mountains but everyone else needs to go...except all the women, well, to take advice from Ali G, all the fit women can stay but the mingas have got to hit the road.

I love the country, its so peaceful. Sucks to hear the place is getting more and more developed, those houses sound insane. If I had that much land I would just build race track on it. Screw the house, ill just sleep in a tent and shower in a river LOL

i bet you don't even know who kamehameha is or that the school was named after him

novass 04-02-2004 04:44 AM

As a matter of fact I do know who Kamehameha was, a King if im not mistaken. I just saw an episode of Dragonball on Cartoon Network and that was the first thing that popped into my head. You cant think I would believe your school was named after a cartoon show and not something/someone more important.

EDIT: Remembered why I knew this. There was a poster on the wall of a Hawaiian restaurant. Remembered the name due to the use of it in the aforementioned cartoon, but aside from that I dont remember anything else.

Well - this is where I went to high school.

Strict, formal schooling - complete with hazing, corporal punishement and other "character forming " practises. History and heritage dating back to 1866.

Also one of only 4 institutions in the world that get a guarenteed Rhodes Scholarship awarded every year.

Well, I'm right by the Mississippi River, not sure I'd want to bathe in it though! It's kind of gross. Although, with about 14 trillion lakes about, I'm sure you could find somewhere to clean yourself. Remember, Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 lakes!
That is what it says on my license plate anyway!
We should get a thread going with pics of peoples towns and cities. It's always interesting to see what other places look like. I need to get me one of those new fangled digital cameras.
