That was a great video. Thanks! Just to give you an insight on the aircraft used in this little recon adventure. The Army calls it the OH-58D 'Kiowa', based on the very popular Bell JetRanger commercial helicopter. This little chopper is a scout-recon vehicle. Basically the vehicle was built to go far forward of our advancing units, fly low and slow- using terrain such as hills, treelines and buildings for cover and then spot and track potential targets using it's laser rangefinder, NightVision or it's Foward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) which are housed in a special dome located above the rotor hub. All the helicopter has to do, and in this case if you look closely in this video you can see the trees in the foreground-that is where the helicopter was situated behind, is just hover behind these trees, the pilot just looking at the trees from his windscreen but flying just high enough to 'pop up' the dome above the trees. Him and his co-pilot can view everything with a special on site reticule. Once there they can either attack the target themselves- this bird has 'teeth', if they are carrying machine guns, Hydra unguided rockets, Stinger air to air or Hellfire missles, or they can send the tacticle data to other units so they can either intercept them or study the data at HQ. Did you guys notice that when the pilot told everyone what was going on, all the other pilots were requesting target location? He was in contact with all his buddies using a secure tactical battlefield communications system.
