"You're fired"..the South African way

South African farm worker in dispute with employer believed thrown to lions
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Four men were charged with murder and the Labour Ministry began an investigation Wednesday into allegations a farm worker was beaten and then killed by being thrown into a lion enclosure.

Nelson Shisane was allegedly assaulted and then tossed over a fence, into a park where lions are bred after a dispute with his employer at a nearby farm, said ministry spokesman Snuki Zikalala.

Police found bones, torn clothes and a skull in the lion enclosure.

Shisane's employer, Mark Scott Crossley, and three co-workers, Simon Mathebula, Richard Mathebula and Robert Mnisi, have been arrested and charged with murder. They were denied bail and are scheduled to appear in court Feb. 19.

Zikalala said investigators believe Shisane was fired last year.

Shisane's family reported him missing Sunday.

I saw a report on South Africa, it seems pretty unsecure for the less !!!
Some expensive cars buyers used to let a snake in their car to avoid car jacking.

Its much safer than u would expect. ur chances of being a crime victim are more or less the same as anywhere in the world - u just have to be smart about ur safety.

People who have lived in the states and moved back say its more dangerous in New York and Chicago than in Cape town or Durban... thats their opinion remember.

I have never been a victim of serious crime yet.. touch Sig 220..

FoxFour 02-11-2004 06:04 PM

Why such heavy crime there? Organized crime? Or some other situation that the rest of the world may be unaware of?

scubywrxr 02-11-2004 06:35 PM

unemployment and hunger are tha main reasons for petty crime... Serious crimes are committed by local fall guys for foreign crime organisations (these include british, greek, italian, chinese, russian, north and south american, nigerian and other african crime lords)

White collar crime is growing rapidly, the biggest sector in dollar and rand terms and its the type least reported on - committed by the previous privileged and the new elite...

This may sound pretty controversial, but I believe Afrika has skipped some steps in the process of civilisation... :?

Well....trying not to sound racist....I must agree with you on that one. The problem in S.A. (from what I know) is the percentage of people living under the poverty line (which are mostly black). These are the people that are now free, but can't get a proper job (because racism still exists in S.A., and because most of them have little to no formal education), so they have to do what they can to survive. It's a sad situation. I'm glad I don't live there.

BTW: The title of the topic was not put there to stereotype South Africans. It could have happened in any other country on the planet, in a similar way...and more grewsome stuff has happened in other countries (recall the guy that "slipped into the barrel of sulfuric acid).
