nice comparison test, was expecting the two to be very similar, but oh well... enjoy 8-)

More torque, more power, shorter gearing, cup tires... GT2 is in the other league :P

I wonder why the Z06 was so far off of its time. Other sources have tested it near its claim. It's almost as if he was driving an LS3 car.

What's with the guys "I know which car I'd rather do 180 in." If I'm not mistaken, the 'vette is much more stable high speed than the more finicky Porsche. Atleast Danica Patrick, testing for Motor Trend, fnd the Z06 much more stable at speed than the GT3RS.

who has tested the 997 GT2 vs. a Z06 before? the Z06 only has the weight advantage.... the 911 is more slippery shape, much more downforce, and .... of course power and torque advantages.... and tire advatage.... seems like the Z06 is stacked against to not win against the mighty GT2... bring on the ZR1 ;)

I'm just assuming that the GT2 would be fairly similar to the GT3RS at high speed. I know the suspension tuning, weight, and other factors are quite different, but it's the best guess I have at the moment.

with "only" 414 hp in the GT3's.... they have been known to do 195 mph given enough of a straight to go WOT ;) stability in a bowl at high speed in the GT3 while turning is not quite the same as having the steering wheel locked at dead center for a long straight... that said, supposedly, the 997 GT3 RS doesn't make as much d/f as the GT2 as well...

Hopefully a good portion of that downforce is helping out the front wheels on the already rear biased Porsche.

Which brings me to another point. The Porsche should be a bit easier to launch with more of its weight on the drive wheels than the vette.

they are easy to launch.... damn near idiot proof ;) Drop teh clutch from 5500 +- and point in the direction you want to end up :P

D/f is over the front, and in the rear.... the weight over the rear axle helps on launch, hurts in braking, and helps on corner exits... unless you lift... (never never never lift in a 911 even if its AWD)

the reason why the vette is quick to 60 is gearing, and some amount of weight over the rear axle thanks to the gearbox being back there.... but it is far from the advantage the GT2 would have.

at speed, you'd want d/f over the rear.... imagine going over a bump where the rear gets light... and suddenly your ass is in front of you... but, the trick with a 911 is to stay on the gas if your in trouble.

WR once forced porsche to go with 315's in the rear of the 993 GT2 because he powerslid in 6th gear while driving on NS.... a 'hairy' moment he didn't want to repeat.

That was an enjoyable comparison! They don't do the straight gun fight enough nowadays. I especially liked the fact that they made repeated attempts as well as side by side runs, just so you could see that it wasn't just a launch issue, etc.

Even though I'm not a big vette fan, I was surprised to see it snatch second repeatedly. Maybe it was a tired European press car... I think that all things being equal, the GT2 should be just a little faster in a straight line imo. However, according to sport auto it is around 15 s faster on the NS (7:48 vs. 7:33 - both their times for each car).

Regarding the confidence at high speed, I think it was more a perception thing that the Porsche is considered to be more 'developed' from an engineering standpoint, especially for autobahn use.

It just bothers me that that Vette was so far off of the claimed times and other tested times from other auto journalists. They did mention that it was slightly uphill and they were carring a camera man but there was something up with that vette (or was he really that lousy of a driver? He seemed competent.)

enzoferrari 03-27-2008 01:38 AM

ZR1 VS GT2 and we are talking

79TA 03-27-2008 01:40 AM

If the ZR1 hits its claimed times there should be no contest. This really should have been a more exciting shoot out, but oh well.

A "no contest", now thats a laugh

yg60m 03-27-2008 02:35 AM

The Z06 is half the price of a GT2 ;-) We will see how the comparo turns against a ZR1.
Anyway this 997 GT2 is a true beast !!

RC45 03-27-2008 03:31 AM

That car was totally nackered.

I cant imagine I know anyone with a C6 Z (and I know quite a few - probably more people than athe total number of C6 Z's in all of Europe ;)) who could pull off a 6500rpm+ launch with the stock Goodyear runflats on a cold day.

This is why its important for magazine tests to include a dyno test to at least verify the car they are testing is not completely worn out.

:)
