New generation diesel
many years ago a type of engine ,the diesel, was slow for truck and for work hard, now diesel is sportive engine with 16v and turbo
which you prefer JTD, fiat/lancia/alfa and opel(gmc) TDI vw/audi/seat/skoda BMW d HDI citroen/peugeot TDCI ford/jaguar CDTI honda CDI mercedes/jeep/chrysler D-4D toyota td nissan/renault i've a golf 4 tdi and i love this motor but i've drive new 2.0 tdi and jtd 16v and 270cdi mercedes graet engine |
Diesel hasn't hit us yet down under..So thats a hard question as we don't have many of those cars here.
|
and they never will because diesel is expensive
|
Diesel expensive? I always thought the fact (terrible) that aound here in the middle class 50%+ of the cars are diesel it's because diesel cars are way cheaper to run thanks to scarce fuel consumption.. what did I miss?
|
Kawa22: Opel actually hard to define.
In fact opel used to use a BMW cylinder block for their 2,5 td and now they have a new 2,2 engine with a rotary injection pump VP44 made by Bosch (like in Audi 2,5TDI - with no red letter). Then they have a 1,3 and 1,7 and 3 litre diesel engines which are common rail. Back to the question: D4D really sucks (tried) BMW (d) FIAT/ALFA/LANCIA (JTD) and Ford (TDCI) are really fine. But I havent tried Honda yet but it gets very good opinions. We will see. |
Yep. diesels are a bit more expensive to buy but then you save while driving.
If you don't drive lots of kms/mile you will be better with a petrol engined car. Usually the threshold of feasibility is around 30 000 km a year. |

Diesels are more expensive to make. But in most European country's diesel-fuel costs less then gasoline, due to tax regulations. The reason is because one thought diesels didn't harm the environment so much as gasoline engines (less CO2-emissions). And trucks drive on diesel so it's a way of not disadvantaging the transport sector. But in reality diesel do more damage to the environment, due to higher NOx-emissions and soot. But also gasoline and gasoline engines became more environment friendly. Diesels are popular in the European continent due to their lower fuel costs. If you drive lots of km's, the higher price of a diesel car is worth thinking about because of the lower fuel prices and less fuel consumption. |
Wuputt: very good post.
Thamar: OK Opels suck anyway but come on - Ford makes very good TDCI engines. All right they are really weak before turbo engages (below about 1800rpm) and it takes half a second after you press to get it going hard. But they are very well manared, they dont vibrate they are quiet (Focus - the most quiet in it's class) and the sound is very prtrol-like. |
Since your not from America i will just not answer you ford sucks with diseal comment. Here in America the Ford Diseal trucks are king, they run effecient and makes GOBS of power. To bad you guys dont get what we get. And here in america, you never see regular people driving diseal unless its an old mercedes, or a VW. On rare occasion you will see reg people driving Diseil trucks but thats about it. usually only construction workers and other type of heavy duty workers have the diseals. Also Diseal is cheap here, but not alot of gas stations have it.

Dang, I have two friends owning diesel Focus and they always say the Focus is the best diesel they ever had LOL... and they are sure the next car will be another diesel Ford.. how strange :D
|
I know they are, thats why i said since your not from the US. All Domestics over seas blow.
|
Ford diesel is max 2000 tdci with 130cv
the top is 2400cc for jtd bmw audi mercedes have v8 with over 258 cv and 4000cc |
ok i think wutputt answered your question TT.
yes it depends from country to country. i think diesel is like 20c more than unleaded (92 RON) petrol per litre over here. thats why hardly any roads cars are diesel. |
I just don't like diesel. They're just good for long motorway hauls where you stay in fifth. It's all about torque, but the powerband is usually far too narrow to do some serious driving. Ever tried accelerating out of a fast third gear corner in a diesel? You'll often find that it revs too much in third to be of any use (all the power's gone once you go over 3,500 revs) and fourth will give you too little revs for some throttle response and adjustability. I find it frustrating. Diesel cars are popular now, because most people think an engine will explode if you rev it higher than 3,500 (go to 4,000 and they think you're a maniac). If you only use that small part of the rev range diesel will feel more powerful than petrol thanks to the torque. Fact is however, that diesel engines are still a lot slower than petrol engines with the same displacement. Even when turbo's are added the petrol version will outperform the diesel version. It needs a different approach. Besides, without turbo's diesel engines wouldn't be half as powerful as they are now. We all know what happens when you put a turbo on a petrol engine. That adds some serious extra performance.
If I had no choice but to drive a diesel engine, I'd choose BMW's 3 litre. Alfa's JTD engines are good as well (for as far as I think diesels can be any good), but I have serious problems with diesel engines in Alfa Romeo's. I can't bear the thought... |
I share your opinion, stradale.
Petrol engines are more fun to drive. You have a wider torque range to play with, en sounds so much better :D And if you compare diesel and petrols the right way (normal aspirated vs normal aspirated and turbocharged vs turbocharged), petrols will always outperform their diesel friends. Except sometimes diesel will be a little bit quicker in very short sprints from 70 to 80 km/u for example. But when viewing the whole picture, petrols just have better performance figures. |
