Top Gear crew already had safety fears.
 

"The Top Gear production crew already had health and safety concerns about the show before presenter Richard Hammond was critically injured yesterday attempting to break a British land speed record. The crew were planning to air their concerns at a meeting scheduled for last night.

A source who works on the show told Broadcast that senior crew members had "very, very serious concerns" about health and safety. In a separate recent incident members of crew are understood to have narrowly escaped injury when a high performance car skidded of a test track during filming.

The source said: "The test driver wasn't happy about the position of the crew but they are just expected to get the shots that are needed. People working on the show have been really concerned about health and safety and having to work from dawn until desk."

The BBC denied the incident had taken place, and a spokesman said the planned meeting had been called by Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman to "discuss improved camera techniques, use of rigging and use of mini-cams. It was categorically not about health and safety issues."

The spokesman added: "All BBC programmes, including Top Gear, take health and safety extremely seriously. The meeting was not called for health and safety reasons. If people were going to raise health and safety issues at the meeting it is the first we have heard of it."

Hammond was understood to be driving at 280mph when the jet propelled car flipped onto its roof and skidded al ong the York airfield.

That's a different story. When we do photo shoots I expect my photographers to be safe first and have good shots only second. I I have to risk more in a car to achieve same effect, I'll do it, but they have to be safe.

Anyone remember the stigg spinning the aston ? and didn't he crash the koneeesssig and also I think they wrecked someones classic jag, and then the reasonably priced car, thats almost flipped over twice and even lost a wheel !

I'm pretty sure the Stig, as well as all the other presenters, knew the risks. It doesn't take a fucking genius to know that going 280 mph in a jet-propelled car is dangerous; the same can be said for driving an 800+ hp supercar made by a company that just came out of nowhere. Heck, performance driving is a seriously dangerous job. That's why racing drivers have such a hard time getting personal insurance.
I really doubt many people would watch Top Gear if all they did was drive SUVs through Cheshire and Volvos through downtown London. I think most people watch the programme because it's exciting television. Excitement usually comes from danger or porn. And who would want to see Jeremy banging the Motorcycle Whores, or May with his fucked up hair doing the 69 with an 18 year-old virgin?

I dont see why the crew have to be almost run over though.

As for Richard, no matter what happens, at least he was doing what he liked most. That being said, I hope he and his teeth make a quick recovery so we can get a new series of Top Gear.

Me too, no Im not a pussy its just that it is important isn't it? I work at a wine and spirits shop, loads of money there. How do you think I would feel with no camera system, or police button under the counter, not as safe as I am now :wink:
