Video 'resizing'??
 

Evening all,

I didnt quite know where to post this but im hoping someone can advise me.

I have recently started capturing video from my mini DV camera, which is working superbly, im using nero vision express 3. However i am left with HUGE video files, many Gb's in size.

Does anyone know of any software (preferably free, or at least a sample i can trial) with which i can reduce the quality and hence file sizes of these captured videos to something more reasonable!

Any help would be much appreciated as my hard drive is becoming rammed!!!

Virtual Dub! It's the most popular program for the task, mainly because it's so easy and it's freeware. Load the file, then choose type oif action for video and audio seperatelly (leave alone or compress) and then choose the compressor, save and let the program do the work. If you have any problems don't hesitate to ask. Here is the download link:

For all the settings when compressing videos what would anyone advise, im messing around with different ones at the moment seing what the results are, but im trying XVid at its its most compression, can anyone throw me any settings that work well for them when resizing video captured from a mini DV camera, or is it just trial and error?

The most reasonable quality/filesize ratio for Xvid is 800-900kbps.

You should have a program called MiniCalc in the directory you installed Xvid. Just type in the length of the movie, what audio codec you are using and what output size you'd like and the program will calculate what bitrate you should use.

You can also try Dr. Divx 2.0 wich is free or AutoGK (Gordian Knot). They basically use VirtualDub :wink:
