BMW to produce engines that have start-stop engine system

I've never heard of this technology and I am now wondering why other car manufacturers are not going along with this. The fact that many city drivers are stuck in traffic for the majority of their time creates lots of pollution not to mention wasting fuel.

Dont u end up spending more gas when you restart your engine? Glad they are taking a step into the right direction...but lets all concentrate on Hydrogen

Because it takes a lot of energy to start an engine back up every minute or so in traffic. I guess you would need one hell of a battery.

I'm sure they've thought about those obvious reasons..

I'd imagine the system would be somewhat of what a hybrid would do at a stop..

this system could be used in conjunction with the starterless system BMW is developing. From what i understand they almost have it figured out, but the voltage requirement is still too high. In some places there is a voltage level at which you must obtain an electricians license to work on the system. And at this point the voltage requirement for this system is above that limit.

This is the same as what was used in the ford hytrans prototype. I saw a programme that had a bit about it in it and it was just the same as driving any other van but when it was put in neutral the engine was switched off. I think it makes more sense for delievery type vehicles that are stopping and starting alot more.

If I'm not mistaken, a few Citroëns are already fitted with these start-stop systems.

IF YOU read the article, it says Citroen already has two cars with this system..

Wasn't the new M3 supposed to have a V8 with 400hp? But twin-turbo? I would have thought BMW would make it naturally aspirated :?:

The new 335i has a twin-turbo I6, but up to this point, everything I've seen had the M3 staying NA... Maybe just some misinformation/mixed up information on Autobild's part?

It will probably be a diesel based engine. They usually can take more punishment than gas engines. Whatever the reason, I dont want it.
