A-10 Thunderbolt

The jet was basically built around that monster cannon (30mm) GAU-8/A .

It launches Maverick missiles , Mk 84 high drag (you`ll see a chute) freefall bombs and cluster bombs . :)

A10 is the only jet engined fighter I love. Thanks for video.

I've seen some A-10s at airshows, and they are sweet in person, they have a really awesome sound to them, and always put on a good show! Thanks for the link. 8)

a-10 is kinda like the original hummer to me. It screams "get the hell outta my way."

gucom 05-05-2006 01:21 PM

its an amazingly awesome plane, and one of the things that would scare the shit out of me like nothing else on earth if i were on the receiving side of it... thx :)

^^^Because the GAU-8A fires shells filled with depleted uranium , each shell weighs approx. 32 kg.

At a rate of fire of 3900 rounds/minute , you`ll see how many kilos of hot ammo go out

Also, an interesting fact about the A-10 is that its Gatlin gun is so powerful that when it is fired in flight, it actually slows the plane down.

Most aircraft equipped with guns or cannons have the same problem. Firing of the six .50 caliber machine guns on the old F-86 Sabre would slow down that aircaft a good 15 knots if fired continously.

I read somewhere once that the gun is so powerful that it can only be fired for about 5 seconds at a time otherwise it will slow the A10 down so much that it will stall...

The plane won't stall because of the gun. The gun can only be used in short intervals because otherwise the gun would melt from the continuous use.

I understand what you mean a10 is a anti tank plane but I mean a plane wich is using in war. My english is not good and sometimes I have problems when I translated a word in Turkish to English.

WTF? your kidding right, you think that it fires a bullet that weighs about half of what an adult weighs?

Toronto 05-06-2006 01:55 PM

^^ he is wrong.
it fires 30mm 302gram ammo. (0.65pounds)

and the plane is the Thunderbolt "II" / Warthog
becuase a it isn't a P-47 Thunderbolt, but more like the P-38 Lightning? wounder why they didn't name it Lightning? looks similar and has/had similar roles.

I got this info from an old military magazine :)

:? Sounds way too weird , I don`t think at that weight it has that much penetrating power against an armoured tank , Chobham or conventional , taking in consideration the fact that is doesn`t fire from a very close range , even if the muzzle velocity is around 1000 metres/second
