winrar / winzip questions

just bought a laptop (preowned, mind you) that doesn't have winzip installed. i'm trying to search for it on the microsoft website but i can't find it to download it, and i can't find a place to download winrar for free without paying an ungodly amount for a trial membership.

anyone know where i can get winrar or winzip for free?

winzip/winrar isnt owned by microsoft so you wont find it there. You can google it up.

www.winzip.com and www.rarsoft.com are the original pages. You can only dload trials though, not the full thing.

I use IZarc myself, it's freeware and works reasonably well. Similar to WinZip in terms of interface actually.

i have to say... i've been running a trial (freeware) version of winrar since i built my pc... its not even annoying anymore to close the box that pops up every new instance of the program running

i love it, its easier to use then winzip IMO... but, alien knows his stuff... try out some of that wonderful open source (??) stuff :)

There are many programs now which are able to compress/decompress Rar and Zip files: 7-Zip, ExtractNow, Simplyzip and TUGzip just to name a few.
