2006 WRX Chip
 

I recently purchased a 2006 WRX. I love the increased low end torque of the 2.5l engine and the overall performance car is great compared to the 2.0l version! Like any other car nut i am looking to get a bit more out of it. I am looking to get the Cobb tuning Accesport to flash my ECU. This bumps power up to 255HP and 300lb/ft or torque from 230hp and 235lb/ft. My concern is will the stock clutch hold up to the massive increase in torque. I do very few if any high rpm drop clutch launches so that isn't much of a concern. I know subaru's are very durable and have a feeling the clutch will handle the increase in torque just fine but i want to make sure. Everyone's opinions would be appreciated!

Damn! i guess i hadn't realized the 06 MY had the 2.5 liter engine... sudenly i find myself not wanting it quite so much... mabey i just need a test drive of it soon.

and regarding your clutch wear... itts definately realistic that it wouldn't last as long. but also, your low gear synchromesh (1rst/2nd) may or may not be an issue.

i know a MY 2002-2005 are said to be able to handle about 280 hp, and i dont doubt similar torque numbers. im not sure if any of the other internals were changed with this model year; but replacing

all in all, it couldn't be terribly expensive to upgrade to the STi clutch... that one is said to be able to handle 600 hp or so :P

Thats close to a 30% increase in torque, you sure thats accurate?

Why don't you want it so much now that you know its a 2.5L? Do you prefer the 2L for some reason?

Dont worry, the Impreza will take this without missing a beat. Add a full flow exhaust and a drop-in filter and revel in the wonderful midrange of the 2.5. Where the 2.0 STI was lagging at 3,5k the 2.5 is pulling hard and getting angrier by the rev long before that 8)

mainly, weight distrabution; the 2.5 STi suffered (slightly) from this... but like i said, mabey i just need a test drive. I love the new looks of the 'rex.
do you think the 06 is underrated then? the old 2.0 peaked hp @ 6000... hows the new one for upper range torque?

Did'nt much notice any difference. The 2.5 feels stronger and as eager on top if you ask me. But then I thought the "old" STI was a bit peaky. Can't say much about the rest of the car as the one I drove was delivery mileage w/o plates, but I think it looks great in the flesh - particularly so on medium gray as opposed to blue. Looks nicer inside too compared to MY'03 :)

Edit: Just noticed you were talking anout the WRX - "my car" is an '06 STI. In that case, certainly no worries!

I don't think anyone will be able to notice that the engine weighs a few kgs more you know. Its the same engine just slightly larger bore. Particularly not with that sexy center diff ;)

i think we both made errors... i know the 2.0 STi was much more peaky, and i think peak hp was way up aat 6600 rpm; were the 2.5 sti uses less boost, and has its peak torque/hp figures at the same rpm range as the 2.0 wrx.. 4000 peak torque, 6000 peak hp.

congrats on getting a 06 STi... i love its new look, and functional aero-aids :-D... and naturally, the boxer 4 is the best sounding 4 banger ever (well, the 550 RSK may be slightly better :lol:) its the #1 car on my list if a few sales go through ;)---at least until summer

Well a friend of mine has an 05 WRX modified to over 400hp, and he's been on the original clutch the whole time, so you should be just fine from what i've noticed.
