Classic Porsches

So I thought I'd kick off this new section with a simple discussion.

Classic Porsches.
1: Which is the road version you'd most like to own AND drive.
2: Which is the racing car you'd most like to own and race.

Roadgoing
I know the 2.7 RS lightweight is arguably the best Porsche of all time and it was made in a "touring" version - kind of similar to the much later 959 which came in "sport" and "comfort". I also think this is the most common template for replicas. The 550 Spyder replicas usually sport fibre bodies and VW engines, so do not count.

For myself its a hard choice. I have a soft spot for the later 3.0 Carrera (1976/77), but I really wouldn't mind an earlier 2.4 S which I suspect would give a more pure driving experience.
Interestingly the 2.4 has similar performance to my own 1980 SC and the Carrera is a little faster having 20bhp more.
There is a little orange 2.4S I see about once per month on the road. I am not a huge fan of orange, but looking at the car sends you back into an earlier era. I don't think I would mind much. It is in great nick too. :)

Somehow I am not a huge fan of the ducktail spoiler of the 2.7RS and I suspect that the lightweight may be more of a special weekend car than an every day car. Can't really say though, it's just a feeling.

My SC. (It's 1980, so its a classic too!)

Racing
Well the 917K springs to mind. It's hard to think of another that grabs the imagination like this one.
The only other I can think of immediately is the 908. I sw one race and I loved it. It looked very poised, but not overpowered like the 917.
Here are some images:

1: 70īs 911 Turbo (better if itīs the 3.3 litre)
2: None in concrete but drive a legend has a unique attraction. One of the classic long tail bodywork would be nice.

I agree with the earlier turbos as a good choice. Although I would say you need to drive with your epitaph in the glovebox! Especially on rainy days.

If I am not mistaken the USA wanted to ban these because they said the car was mortally dangerous!

Alright!!! finally a classic car section...My pledging has ended!! (ok ok, i know it was almost not because of me, but i asked for it too, so..)

So, answering both your questions at the same time, I choose porsche's last "Gentleman Racer"....the last car you could drive to the racetrack, race, and come back home on...
The most beautiful car in the world (IMO) and the best classic porsche
THE 904 CARRERA GTS

Now this car was a groovy car, at a groovy time (1964)....most famous for it's wins at targa florio, class wins at le mans, and 2nd place in 1965 rallye de monte carlo....I just think it's gorgeous...A brazilian guy owns a green one, as well as a 908 spider, and a ferrari 250LM...and other cars...his 904 is by FAR the most beautiful...I saw one at lemans this year...how gorgeous!!
Well that's it...

er...DAYEM road car is hard...classic 911 (original series, but not the RS), or a 911 Turbo of basically any generation, or a 959...hmmm thats hard :| BTW what defines classic?
racecar...i guess the GT1 isnt a classic yet...is the 956? hmmm just to be sure i'll choose the auto union  ok but thats not a porsche car, just designed by porsche...hmm...ok ill just go for the obvious and pick the 917 that won le mans with a distance record that stands to this day 8)

I'd love to drive a RUF Yellowbird, those are beautiful cars and sooo fast!! Im not a big porsche coneiseur (sp) but the yellowbirds stand out in my eyes, although they might not be quite old enough to be considered classics. That 1970 911 posted by everso is also an extremely beautiful car, theres a reason why porsche stuck with that same bodyline for over 35years ;)

Classics are defined as cars older than 25 years. So currently cars up to 1980 are considered classic.
For racecars that is up to Porsche 936
For roadcars up to 911SC and 930 Turbo.

For a guide look here http://www.theautobahn.com/forum/sho...=1970&end=1980
I'll bet you will find some you forgot about - like the 935 "moby dick" for instance. :)

So I am afraid 959 is out, so is GT1.

irrational_i 10-21-2005 07:44 PM

The 904 is an awesome car. I have never seen one in the flesh though.
I did not choose it because of its flat 4 engine. Somehow I've always wanted at least 6! 8)
So fine there are 904/6 cars. About 4 I think?
But I would still stick with the 908. Tough choice.

But its definitely a very worthy car.

This one was up for sale for a LONG time. I think I've been watching it for at least a year. But its sold now. :(

hmmm.....how many road legal 904s do you think there are? i've never seen one in person. the design of the 904 is so ahead of it's time. People always say that the Miura was the first supercar....but i think the 904 might have been.

Most of them were road legal...you could actually drive yours to the racetrack, and back....Some were really race prepped, and had 8 cyl. engines even...there was a spider version, that was HORRENDOUS...only for racing...it had nothing to do with the actual car...

irrational_i 10-21-2005 07:51 PM

Hmm. I didn't realise they had 8 cylinders as well. That must have been really something though!
I think I will read up some more on 904's :D

irrational_i 10-22-2005 09:47 AM

Well the 908 definitely had a 3 liter Flat-8 engine and that is late 60's.

Seems a few of the 904's had 8 cylinders after a quick search.
904-008, 904-009 and 904-034 that I could quickly spot.

Also seems many had 6 cylinders fitted later, including 908-034 which ran at classic Le Mans 2002.
All types where successful in racing. :)
Awesome car.

1973 911E, in forest green, please. and as for the racer, i'd go with either the 917 or 935 "Moby Dick". I'm leaning towards the 935.

TransAm 10-22-2005 10:11 AM

1: Which is the road version you'd most like to own AND drive.

1974 911 - much like what evrso already posted. 1974 because thats as old as me!

2: Which is the racing car you'd most like to own and race.

I know jack about racing cars, sorry! I would say one of the rally 911s though!

Schwalbe 10-22-2005 04:16 PM

My Porsche road version choice is definitively the 911 2.7 RS.

About my favorite Porsche racing version, there's too many model which I like. It's difficult to make only one choice. My best trio is this one: ( 917-956-904). :P

V8? are you sure? :? I thought the first Porsche V8 was the 928... :hmm:

No V before the 8
