Laser Detectors
Hey guys, i was wondering how much you know about Laser Detectors. I have a new Valentine One in my car, and was driving down the street the other day. I believe it was an Infinity Q45 following me, and the laser detection would not stop going off. I figured that it was the Ininifty, because as soon as he either passed me or turned, the detector would stop going off. I was wondering if you guys knew if the laser guided cruise controls would set off laser detectors or what.

i know for a fact that the laser and radar guided cruise systems will trip out a detector. I've actually had to deal with it as a complaint on a ticket.

very possible and... I guess it will happen more frequently with more luxury cars equiped with cruise controls , becuase it's the same basic system used for speed detectors

Hhhmmm.. Radar guided systems would not be allowed to transmit at police frequencies... if they could then - radar jammers would be instantly legal.
Unless this is the loop hole Radar Jammer manufacturers have been waiting for... ;) :twisted: Laser on the other hand uses light frequencies - which are not governed by the FCC. |

And how does the V1 interpret this? And if the manufacturers have been granted mobile transmission rights for those frequencies then we are a very close to legal radar jammers. A radar jammer simply needs to transmit correct frequency signal to fool /confuse/alter the reading the Police Reciever gets back. :) Radar jammers are not legal simply because of their non-licensed transmission. What is the frequency of the 745 radar transmission? |
i would have to check on that but we took the V1 out of the 745 and put it in another car, aimed them at each other and the V1 still went bonkers. It may be close enough to trigger the detector.
The radar unit has a short range and very narrow cone, so i think that's how they are getting around the laws. The ACC2 on the E90 though is a little trickier since it monitors the lanes next to you as well as the real estate directly ahead. *edit* The transmitter works at 76-77 GHz with a range of 120m Max. with a horizontal range of 8 degrees (+/- 4degrees from vehicle centerline) |
This problem occurs to me only when I pass in front of some Infinity FX45 and Q45 on the highway. My V1 indicates this: ( ≡ "laser"). Me too, I'm sure it's the laser cruise control device on these vehicles. I hate this device system. Fortunately, it's not everybody who chooses this option on their luxury cars.
Now the only solution remains to buy a radar laser jammers to eliminate this problem. :? |
I also have a V1 and my parents FX i know sets off laser sometimes and our FX is not equipped with laser/radar cruise. From my experience, i believe the V1 gets set off by the headlamps because of some light frequency they emit at a certain angle. Also for your information if you park in front of a store with red neon lights, the V1 will detect a 'laser' signal and also in traffic when behind most Chevy Trailblazers, the third tail lamp on the newer ones look like a neon light kinda of, and they have a tendency to set mine off as well

i had never heard about that one but i guess it makes sense. as long as the attenuation of the light is ust right which makes me wonder how close you have to be to those lights to set the thing off.
I've known for years that the automatic doors on the supermarkets operate on the same band apparently as some of the older radar guns/detectors. although when you're 7 and don't even know what that funny thing stuck to the windshield is or why it's beeping like crazy near the store, it's rather confusing :? |

Oh, one other thing. I do wonder if the laser systems can jam lasers. Can you smell something going on here. That would be interesting to research. I know that some laser opperated garge door openers can be used to block laser and radar, so i wonder if the car can do the same, straingt from the factory. :-/

Yea that is interesting about the lights, ive never really experienced the neon lights problem, however, that might explain a couple of laser occourences. I wonder what the specs on the V1 for picking up laser signals must be. Obviously they must use cop laser guns to determen what type of laser etc. to pick up and announce. I imagne that they would give it some tolerence for as you said the fog, or dust, but the tolerence cant be that big, right?

well, in any kind of climatic condition like fog or rain, the laser is useless. radar is also severely hampered.
through the freedom of information act, you can request info on the type of radar/laser guns used by the police in your area. |
