This thing came in at lunch 2 days ago. My service writer walked out to it and said he didn't think it would start but tried anyway. Sure enough it started cranking over but made a noise 50 times worse then nails across a chalk board.

After pushing it into my stall i noticed the service indicator lights were in the red which meant the car was way overdue for service. After checking the oil level (.5 qt over filled but clean) i tried cranking it again jst for the hell of it. Amazingly it fired up :shock: i didn't let it run though.

I pulled off the lower oil pan after draining the oil and lo and behold, there was a full bearing worth of shavings in the lower pan and the crankshaft was drier than Death Valley. After poking at the oil pump drive chain and realizing it was serving no purpose whatsoever, i pulled off the cover and found the pictured 3 pieces laying about.

What happened was the threads on the oil pump drive shaft that allow the nut to secure the sprocket to the pump, had snapped off and vibrated out of the nut causing the sprocket to come off the shaft effectively rendering the oil pump useless..yet the woman kept on going despite having the oil pressure warning on in the instrument cluster :roll: The result?

Remanufactured M62 Longblock= $11,500
Labor= 25.15 hrs @ $80/hr= $2,016
various small parts needed to transfer everything from old engine to new engine= around $1000

What she paid for the car=$7,000

She has yet to approve the work :wink:

Is that the price you buy from dealer at the time of service or is it price if you buy elsewhere? I thought it will be much higher with the usual mark-up dealers normally stiff you with.

Anyway then the 50K list price of a Corvette seems too high if the engine is so cheap. I was expecting engine/total cost of the car around 20% at least. Where does the remaining $45K go???

shit when my oil pressure light comes on I hit the gas and it usually goes off then when I get the chance I check the level it's usually fine. If the pump on the 4.6 wasn't such a bitch I would change it but it works for now.

lol, my first car i had belonged to my mechanic brother first... an 85 Bronco II (2.8 carborated)

so many hours were put into making it work well enough, and besides the labor invovled, it did its job... until it became too much of a hassle to keep it going.... a similar story with my second, and third cars too

That is another case to prove those idiot lights do shit!! An oil pressure gauge will tell u a better story. Oh well, women never look at their dash anyways, so I guess that will only help guys.

see the problem isif the light were to go out I just had the oil pressure gauge crap out on me so at night if I lost pressure I would only know from the check gauges light and have to check everything else first then put on the map light. I pland on a different gauge cluster soon anyway.

Isn't the oil pump on those cars fitted on the front of the crankshaft?

Yeah it's actually a 2 part pump with the sump going into the tank then the main pump behind a cover on the front of the engine that requires removing the crankshaft pulley.
