NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is expected to announce Monday that it will begin shifting its Macintosh computer line next year to Intel Corp. chips, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site on Sunday, citing people familiar with the situation.
The move would be a major change in strategy by Apple, a high-profile win for Intel (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and a blow to International Business Machines Corp. (IBM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) . and Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (FSL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , suppliers of the PowerPC chips long used in its Macintosh systems.

Apple executives were not immediately available for comment.

Apple's decision, which comes after years of industry speculation and behind-the-scenes lobbying by Intel, could cause disruptions for Macintosh users, the paper said.

Application programs will have to be adapted to run on Intel's x86 chips, the calculating engines used in most computers running Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows operating system.

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, is expected to explain the shift Monday during a keynote speech at the company's annual software developers conference in San Francisco, said the people familiar with the situation.

Well - the last excuse for Apple's even existing has been removed now.. :P

Odd move - considering all the supposed advantages of powerpc over x86 architecture.. LOL.

Stupid move on there part, but if they spent half the time selling looks as they did the fact that theyve had the superior hardware for quite some time they would do much better.

Thank god! Apple is over. I grew up on them but that was in 80s.

Making a computer that both hardware and software is proprietary and that represents less than 4% of the world’s computers was just stupid.

and point and click can be attributed to apple, as can touchscreens with handwriting recognition. and functioning gui's. as well as pda's...yeah they definitely deserve to die

This is a weird year. Microsoft makes the switch to PPC and Apple does x86. So does that mean both MS and Apple are dead? Apple migrated twice in the past but they're still here. Apple's switching to Intels because Intel can deliver better performance per watt than what IBM can muster within the same time frame. Apple's just doing what's best for their customers aka their bottomline.

By most people's logic having Linux on x86 makes it "dead and irrelevant" seeming Windows makes up the bulk of the desktop. Most people buy Macs because of the OS. The processors shouldnt really matter. Having a stable platform that doesnt have viruses and spyware matters to some people.

Nope Xerox invented the GUI, Apple paid for a "demo" of the Xerox GUI OS and then stole the idea and came out with the Mac a few years later.

Thats it? Well I hate mac os.....

They did not "pay for a 'demo'" as you say, but they hired people who worked for Xerox. Then they looked at what they had developed and built on it. They expanded the system and made it usable, as well as popular. They made the idea practical....they made it work

I remember using Xerox GUI based products before the GUI based Apple systems came out.

One product was Xerox Ventura and other desktop publishing components.

I seem to remember Xerox failed to patent the mouse, GUI and window concept.

So you're sayin x86 isnt as "good" as PPC? OS X on x86 (aka Marklar) has been in development since 10.0. Apple has had 5 years to internally work out the bugs.

Somehow the "truth" has been manipulated to show Apple didn't copy Xerox work. Quickly reading through some links, Wikepedia seems to have left out major bits of information.

No mention of the products that shipped and utilized runtime MS Windows 1.0x etc. Didn't immidiatly find mention of Windows286 either.

Yes they did. Steve Jobs gave Xerox $1mil in Apple stock to "demo" Xerox's PARC system. They only hired people from Xerox after this. Xerox sued Apple for stealing their GUI concept and the suit lasted for years and years. But Apple eventually won the suit.
