Well in Ukraine there is a highway with a 160(100mph)kmh speed limit.

Sounds good to me. On a saturday morning from here to Croft (the race circuit) the m-way is almost empty, and 140mph in the inside lane is safe for almost the whole journey

Whats the big deal?
The limit in Australia is 100kmh (62mph) on the freeways, unless of course you head to the Stuart Hwy in the Northern Territory where you can go as fast as you want.

personally i don't know anywhere in the uk where its "safe" to do 140mph in the inside lane :lol: even if it looks clear at those speeds lose a bit of concentration and you could be upon a slow moving vehicle within no time, at least in the outside lane there "should" be no really slow moving vehicles, still 140 on the majority of our shitty roads is a bit much, variable speed limits are a good idea however, speed doesn't generally kill on its own but idiots not adapting does, anyone who's driven on motorways here (or anywhere else i bet) in fog, torrential rain etc and seen the way people behave will know what i mean. I consider myself lucky not to have been hit yet by one of these tits :roll:

I know what you mean... 140 is pushing it, but if the driver can cope, and there is nobody there to hit, then what is stopping you... aprat from the law.

In fog, the guy who drove me at those speeds would stick in the "slow" lane, because of all the 3-series/A4/C200 (yup... but not Jabba :wink: ) middle managers who think they have "made it" and are still, in fact, driving glorified repmobiles. They think they have to be the fastest on the road, regardless of the safety of it. (sorry for the rant)

Autocar asked some racing driver what he thinks the motorway limit should be, and he said 100mph at night, because your visibility is diminished, and variable during the day, depending on road conditions.

The racing driver obviously has a higer driving ability than others, so maybe his perspective is skewed, but i agree that the limit should not be constant, and that a higher speed is sometimes suitable :D

The European Union’s energy commissioner should be added to George Carlin's list "of people who oughta be killed" The Autobahn is a perfect machine, most people don't drive 200kmh, I drive there often, across germany, and the traffic usually goes by betwen 120-140kmh. stupid suggestion :twisted: :twisted:

The speed limit ought to depend on local conditions, the quality of the road surfaces and density of traffic.

Even 'in the middle of nowhere' type of places like to New Mexico desert, you'll always have the issue of oncoming traffic on a public road.

Cruise at 130mph, sure it's safe in some types of car designed for performance, but an inexeperienced driver in a 2.0 Accord with 15 year old suspension? Nah. Even in a sports car, at 130mph, sure it's safe until something goes wrong (blowout) and worse if a car just happens to be driving the other direction.

140mph is not safe anywhere in the UK, unless you happen to be holding a stick in your hand as opposed to a wheel.

On an arrow straight motorway, with a clear view one mile ahead, in a brand new Audi S4, with an experienced driver, it seemed safe to me. But hey, i'm just a kid - what do i know?

I agree with the point that older cars/inexperienced drivers will not be safe, but lets not forget, 70mph is a maximum speed limit... you do not have to drive that fast if you want, but you must stay out of the way of others who wish to travel at the upper range of the limit.

Your point about blowouts could be taken two ways. Yes, it could happen, especially on a poorly maintained car, but then again, they are about as likely as a plane crash (and we still use planes, despite the risk). I dislike this fatalist attitude - although this could happen, we cannot feel restrained by it. That's not living!

On a final note, speeding is a drivers chioce, and if/when they choose to drive excessively fast, they should take into account other road users/passengers etc. Really, the only life that should be risked by speeding is the drivers, not his passengers, and not some stranger in another car. However, this is never the case, and i like to hope that the faster drivers are taking a carefully examined risk, rather than a wreckless choice.
