I think your are a little bit bullish about the salary of race engineer. $200k is a salary of a chief mechanic engineer in a top team. In smaller team (like Minardi) the a simple mechanic is almost working for free.
In fact a friend of mine is working for Toyota F1 in Germany as chief of electronic, and I can tell you that he is even not reaching $100k.

I know for a fact F1 engineers can earn from £40k to £100k for higher positions. Eg, 10-15 Renault engine engineers based in the UK have a salary budget of around £million. These don't go to races. Heads of department probably earn a lot more than this...

Race engineers probably earn from about £60k upwards depending on their position.

Mechanics are NOT the same as engineers.

Mechanics only get paid around £15-£20k even at the top teams
