Audi RS6, only 349whp

Just seen a vid from AWE Tuning where they dyno a 2003 stock RS6 and it only put out 349,7hp at the wheels. After they chiptune it, it puts out 404whp.
Is this a real fact? I know that there is a difference in crank hp and whp, but I never thought it could be this big of a loss?. Maybe it's got something to do with the 4wd, but anyway. it's still a 100hp.

Dyno's vary hugely, and given it's 4WD its even harder to get an accurate reading... but then again because it's 4WD they will be more losses than RWD

i've seen a couple RS6 dyno readings before, and they were around 375whp if i remember correctly, in stock mode. Those were done with a 4 wheel dyno.

A loss of 17 percent (375/450whp) is still a pretty big loss compared to most cars.

I'am not saying you are wrong but in what way does the dyno result depend on the brakes :?:

17% is about right for a 4wd car.

One of the guys on a bmw forum was talking about a rolling road day he attended. There was a ford sierra xr4x4 there that recorded 50% transmission loss!

So it could be worse!

cooperluke 02-09-2005 02:58 PM

And those 50% traduce into what kind of energy?? Noise? Heat? It must be a lot of noise and heat!!

:)

MercedeSChink 02-09-2005 03:12 PM

this sounds normal to me, like a stock c32 says it has 349hp but after dyno you get 285 or so...

Heat or do u mean fire LOL!!!!

but yeah, AWD system generally have more drivetrain loss due to extra driveline components and ~20% is still normal.

audi says that it could be 10% more or less than the official figure, in the rs6 case 450 hp. but 349 is not accebtable. if i were the owener of this car i would go to audi.
we had a similar problem in the audi club with some new s4's who hadn't 344hp. the one's with more than 10% difference got a new one.
but getting the right figures for a 4wd car is a real problem. we had the same problem the get the figures for our s4's and rs4's. finally we found some dynos which were capable to measure the performance for 4wd's. but on every dyne we had different figures.... and usually on the dyno from your tuner you'll have the best results...

5vz-fe 02-09-2005 04:27 PM

^10% less than the official figure is for the hp at crank....ie 450*.9 = 405hp.
and adding additional 17% drivetrain loss you have 405*.83 = 336hp

you'd be surprised dude. some people do put AWD cars on 2 wheel dynos.

it wouldn't really fuck the car up, since the other wheels would be on a roller without power, but i know i've read of people with Quattro cars doing 2 wheel dynos and them not being accurate.

Dont the majority of people without access to 4WD dyno's just disconnect the propshaft to the rear and run them FWD.
This would give an inaccurate reading for wheel bhp, but if you determined the transmission loss to the Front wheels only you could get an accurate fly wheel figure.

And that siera!!!! haha, he cant have had any oil in his gearbox, transfer box or diffs! lol

the 17% would be flat out calculated off of 450hp to determine WHP. that 17% should include all power loss, including crank.

Not all engine are producing the exact same HP...they usually fall within a range of acceptable percentage error. (of course 10% is rather high, but a few percent is quite normal) Drivetrain loss usually refer to frictional losses of the drivetrain after the flywheel.....

where did you get 10%??

when a college of mine got his new s4 we put him on a dyno. result=290hp. so we went to another dyno and got the same result. so he contacted audi why his car has only 290hp. the wrote him the a 10% on both side is normal. then he could bring his car to an official audi dealer and they checked his car. after different test the called him and said that his car has nearly 20% less hp and he'll get a new one. after two weeks the new s4 arrived.

otherwise why pay €60'000 for a car with officialy 344hp if in real the car has only 290hp?

MercedeSChink 02-09-2005 05:29 PM

is this true!? usually the hp specs are usually bhp not whp...totally different aspects...

Schwalbe 02-09-2005 07:08 PM

In February 2004, I had the chance to have a ride in a Mugello Blue Audi RS6 to the Shop-garage of one of my friends to carry out a couple of 4WD Dyno test . I still have the printed Dyno Graph and the result is: 343.6 WHP (Stock). Thus, I don't see the problem with 349,7 WHP. Here a talk WHP not HP, so the car remains very powerful.

nearly 400 bhp is no small number already
