BMW E60 M5 manual gearbox ???

I came across this article at m5board.com and I was wondering if someone can confirm or add something to this story.

" Could this really be true? See the screenshot from bmwusa.com site. The rumours could might be true, and then we have a significant news for the Detroit Auto Show. The information first surfaced on a Saturday but all information was then taken down from the BMW USA site the following Sunday. Luckily we at m5board.com took a screenshot if the information. Interesting things are happening for sure for BMW M enthusiasts in North America. "

Maybe just a mistake.

Or else ... this would be great news ;)

i think that may have been mis-interpreted slightly. i think they may be reffering to the fact that it is a 7 speed automated manual transmission. Although the gears are shifted by the SMG control unit, it is still a traditional manual gearbox. Synchros, countershaft and all

however, if a manual gearbox were to be made available for this car, i think they would probably make it a 6 speed box with 6th gear being a severly overdriven gear. the 7th gear on the SMG is mainly to drop revs about 500 more RPM to save fuel on long cruises. i don't think BMW would want to make you have to run through a 7 gate pattern. You might be feeling a bit more like a semitruck driver than a sports car driver after you get into 7th

wow.. i would think it's a typo.. but that would sure be some great news... I wonder what BMW has up their sleeve...?

mv 01-13-2005 05:01 PM

True?...not likely

bmwmpower 01-13-2005 05:05 PM

i think only mistake for many people not me is semi gearbox,
so now will be M5 without any minus, so Great car is better,

twboy1999 01-13-2005 06:06 PM

they are really offering the maual

findleybeast 01-13-2005 07:19 PM

that would be great news if it was true - like a belated release of the manual - but it was probably just a mistake made by a bmw employee

ikon2003 01-13-2005 09:17 PM

Wow, that would be awesome if it were true. A very nice gift to the automotive community.... and while i'm wishing, maybe deregulate the car so top speed in 5th, 6th, and 7th isn't all the same (155mph).

SilviaEvo 01-13-2005 09:22 PM

i highly doubt it is true. it is probably a typo or else BMW would have announced it earlier

YEP.

i'm surprised the M5 people aren't smart enough to understand english....oh wait...i'm not surprised :)

More like wishful thinking on the part of M5 owners...at least BMW doesn't use torque converters on their sporty models, like some other German manufacturers.

oantob 01-13-2005 09:36 PM

i think that they meant that the 7 SMG is the same as the traditional manual trans...
but it would be nice if this was true, and compare the manual M5 to SMG M5 in 0 to 60 mph

ikon2003 01-13-2005 10:49 PM

^ that would be an interesting test. and on the subject of gear changing, just saw the 5th gear review of the new GTI, which has the DSG (direct shift) - the thing changes gears soooo fast. awesome technology w/ two clutches (one for even gears, one for odd). put that on some performance cars like the M5... see some real gear shift time-differences.

^ everso, this is simply a conversation there is no need to insult the intelligence of any M5 owners, especially if you own an Audi TT

you can run but you can't hide their lack of intelligence :)

(psssst. i'll take my TT anyday over their overblown family sedan. thanks for your concern, buddy :))

You will take a TT over an M5...e39 or e60? lol...ok, you do that, I will take the e39 M5 thanks. :P
