New HD and queries
 

I have a few queries and want a few tips on running an efficient HD system.

My two drives will be
200GB 7k200
80GB 5k400

Firstly, which HD should i put windows, my apps, games and stuff like that on. (30GB of stuff)
Then i have my 40GB (max) music collection.
Then my never ending video collection (50GB----->>>>>>).
My pictures/documents are 15GB

Then if i want to rip DVD's, which HD should i use, or will the speed not really matter in the encoding time?
Then my partial downloads from eMule etc...

Advice on partitions, and applications to create partitions is appreciated, as well as FAT32/NTFS format suggestions.

dump everything on the 200 and use the 80 for backup.

I suggest you make like a >10gb partition only for windows from the 7200rpm HD.
I have made an own partition for all my stuff (music, movies, games etc.).
I haven't really ripped any DVD's but I guess that it will work slightly faster on the 7200rpm HD.
What comes to the format I suggest you use NTSF.
I've done all my partitions with Powerquest Partition Magic. It's clear and easy to use.

I have 10gb for windows and I've never ran out of space. Though sometimes it's been close! :D

So use the smaller/slower drive for storage, but the 200GB for current stuff and windows. I was planning on doing something similar to those suggestions, so i can't be that dumb, lol

Powerquest Partition Magic (or is it Symantec Norton Partition Magic nowadays) is my favorite tool for partitions and such.

So know both drives are installed, but i have a problem with my DVD burner.

it is an NEC 3500 (16x max etc..) and i am using Traxdata 8x Discs, burning at 4x with Nero. BUT the disc never completes, it gets to a certain point (usually 71%) and stops burning and using the drive's buffer. I don't know what is wrong :?

What problems could be causing this.
I really need to burn everything to DVD before reinstalling windows on the 200, as it is currently still on the 80GB :|

at least, 2 people I know had those and have nothing but trouble, switched to pioneer drives and problems stopped ;)

Ermmm... how do i go about doing that?

I have got one 185GB partiton at the moment, do i copy it into the first or second partition.

ALSO... i have a Vaio comp, and installation of windows is with a set of back up cd-roms. They delete the partitions each time i want to install it, so i guess i will have to back up all of my stuff anyway :|

LOL... i can get hold of a copy no problems :P

One small problem... the fan control on the PSU is on the backup cd's.. it's very noisy without it. I bet you are gonna say get a new PSU now :wink:

I think i may just get a case with a PSU already in it, so i can just transfer all the components :|

the way my set up for my 200GIG and 80GIG are...

60 GIG's from the 200 went for windows. the rest of the 120 was lefted for misc things.

the 80GIG was split into halves. 40 for videos. and the other 40 for music.

I'm pretty much gonna do something similar to you... when i can sort out Windows, backups, partitioning etc :P

i've got 2 80gb hard drives, and i put windows on one and all my other stuff (music, videos, etc) is safe from any HD damaging viruses

if i were u i would use the 80gb for windows and 200gb for the videos, music, etc

just a suggestion, it seems more safe that way, and u can always partition ur 200gb and backup windows on to it

oh yeah...lol...dont make your files private. my computer totally fucked up one time and It was a hassle trying to recover all this shit. haha

I like your suggestion, but i really wanted windows on the 7200rpm 200gb rather than the 5400rpm 80GB :wink:
