In Norway:

kr 131,33 pr. kW of the first 65 kW
kr 479,00 pr. kW of the next 25 kW
kr 958,30 pr. kW of the next 40 kW¨
kr 1 621,68 pr. kW of the rest...

1 kr is app. 7 $

I am glad ours is based on engine size and not power!

Stupid bunch of idiots!

The reason they do that though is that the majority of cars dont have more than 150bhp.

Its like income tax. People who earn over, i cant remeber what it is in the UK, maybe 40 or 60k get taxed the same amount as those that earn millions because the majority of people earn less than £20k

For example you also have to pay 5000 euro for a hypothetical 3.5 L engine with 120 bhp ;)

Our 'In Traffic Going' tax is based on engine size and engine power. Whatever one of both results in the highest cost, counts. So you always have to pay loads of money. And we even have started about the yearly tax which is only based on engine size. Our hypothetical 3.5 120bhp engine would cost 1.200 euro's/year on top.

Ah ha! Income tax. It works like this in the UK:

Take what you earn, deduct any amounts you are entitled to. Then:

The first £2020 is taxed at 10% (£202)
Then upto £31,400 is taxed at 22% (£6463)
Anything over that is taxed at 40%

After that you have to work out tax on dividens which are taxed at 10% and 37.5%
Then some other stuff including Capital Gains Tax (CGT)

The other way around: 7 kr is 1$

I think that we on top of that have taxes for engine size and the weight of the car too. Not sure.

I think the taxes should be based on emissions instead of power. That doesn't necessarily mean the same thing. I have a comparison from a vacation a few years ago. Two Saab 9-3s, both around 1999 model. One with 170 hp and one with 130 hp (the same 2.0 engine but with and without turbo). Both cars were full, with four persons and luggage for two weeks. The more powerful turbo engine used less petrol than the naturally aspirated engine. Something like 7.6 vs 8.2 litres/100km (29.0 vs 31.3 mpg). A more powerful engine will burn more fuel when pushed to the limit, but for normal driving the less powerful engine is pushed harder, and thus using more fuel. And burning more fuel means higher emissions.

here in the US theres something called a Gas Guzzler tax. if a new car's engine is rated at a fuel mileage below CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards it is accorded a gas guzzler tax which is incorporated into the price of the vehicle. Usually it is 8, 10 and 12 cylinder vehicles that get taxed, i'm not sure about diesel powered engines.

one of the advantages to buying a used car with huge displacement

Price: WRX: € 24.500 (WRX STi: € 37.000)

+ In Traffic Going - tax: € 5000 (payed when registering the car)
+ yearly tax: € 320
+ Insurance (mandatory in Belgium): don't know exact, but for a Scooby it's high, cause it has to be insured as a sportscar (or sportieer car) and Scooby's are loved by criminals overhere, so there stolen a lot.

The yearly tax is quite cheap, cause it's only a 2.0 L engine. If you would have a NA engine with the same power, the yearly tax would be a lot higher.

stracing 09-21-2004 11:00 AM

holy poop...i just calculated what it would for sydney and its cheaper than buying just the car. the cost is 34,000EUR

breakdown, all in AUD
new car $56,630
compulsory third party insurance $587 (would be more if you chose comprehensive. age and where you live affects the amount alot)
registration $243 (calcualted by weight)
stamp duty $1932
dealer extras approx $100
after some shopping around, you could get about $3000 discount

but after one year, you only pay registration and insurance

out of interest, i worked out for a lambo murc would cost 450,000EUR
new car $625626
stamp duty $30381.3
luxury car tax $129231
registration $346
dealer charges aprrox. $500
couldn't find insurance because supercars are dealt by someone else

jon_s 09-21-2004 12:06 PM

You have stamp duty on cars? We only have that in relation to property. The luxury car tax ssems a killer!! What is that based on?

RC45 09-21-2004 08:07 PM

LOL.... out the door price for a 400hp 180mph Vette is $45,000+- (depending on dealer) + local sales tax... :)

No gas guzzler tax ;)

No displacement tax... :P

No HP tax... :D

No speed tax :)

No weight tax

Oh - did we mention less government is actually more? ;)

stracing 09-22-2004 03:17 AM

you have to pay the luxury car tax if the car is listed above $57k. they work it out by (((cost of car - 57,000)*(10/11))0.25). i told a friend abt it, he said it might be already included with the price. so now i'm just waiting for someone in the know how to tell me whether its included or pay it on top of the new purchase price.

stamp duty applies to cars. stamp duty applies to property if its over $500k or if the property is for investment

this is australia, they 'll tax you on anything they could find
