M5 vs E55: "Here's some leaked numbers from next weeks

Autocar: here is the result from the comparison:

1km in 23.8 @ 233 km/h

M5
0-100 in 4.58
1/4 mile in 12.61 @ 185 km/h
1km in 22.7 @ 246 km/h

80-120 km/h
3rd gear M5 2.77 E55 3.83
4th gear M5 4.17 E55 5.78
5th gear M5 4.82 E55 7.35

120-160 km/h
3rd gear M5 3.05 E55 4.40
4th gear M5 4.24 E55 6.21
5th gear M5 4.91 E55 7.50

Hehe, as expected, the E55 is crushed :D. Not that numbers are really good for a final judgment, but we all know the M5 has better handling too ;)

Thanks for the info, and yes it was expected really.
I hope Top Gear take the M5 out for a spin some time soon. :D

cooperluke 09-15-2004 04:34 AM

M5... it had to be better.. otherwhise it wouldn't be an M5!!

TT 09-15-2004 04:36 AM

The test hasnt been released yet so i dont know how serious we can take this acceleration numbers.
But its hard to believe that M5 would release a car that is slower than E55 and rs6.

Ghostbat 09-15-2004 05:02 AM

When tested in Sweden the E55 did 0-100km/h in 4.6sec. Naturally I realize that the new M5 is going to be faster/better than the older E55. But I think the comparison of acceleration within gears are misleading. It's just wrong to compare acceleration in lets say 5th gears of both cars when the M5 has seven gears and the E55 only 5 gears.

BTW does anyone know if the new M5 is going to be available with an ordinary manual transmission?

yes but that's how the cars are built....same thing when bmw fans saying amg using a supercharger. Well, this is how the cars are built, deal with it, it will never be fair comparison.....

and the M5 have only been tested once, E55 like zillions times. Let us first see 10 different test with the M5, first then we can judge which car is the fastest.

I also want to see a tracktest, but we already know which car is the fastest, right??

I'm quoting this from MBworld.org and this guys has a point.

You know what, just because I'm a nice guy I'm going to compare an M5 in the wrong gear against an E55. You do realise that any magazine comparison is always going to compare the same gear in each car. How each manufacturer chooses to gear their cars is their problem.

But it seems the gearing on the E55's 3rd is comparable to the M5's 4th in terms of gear ratio. The same with the 4th & 5th. So if I look at the table & compare to a lower gear from the E55 I get this:

80-120km/h (50-75mph) seconds
M5 3rd 2.77 E55 2nd 2.84
M5 4th 4.17 E55 3rd 3.83 (E55 faster)
M5 5th 4.82 E55 4th 5.78
M5 6th 5.92 E55 5th 7.35

In fact in the M5 is TWO gears higher (6th vs 4th) its 5.92 vs 5.78. So it holds it own even 2 gears up.

120-160km/h (75-100mph) seconds
M5 4th 4.24 E55 3rd 4.40
M5 5th 4.91 E55 3rd 6.21
M5 6th 6.05 E55 5th 7.50

Of course E55's 5th is an overdrive gear so isn't comparable to M5's 6th. That's why M5 is over a second quicker whenever E55's 5th is used.

But the point is on the road who cares? Both will drop gears and as you can see, the M5 will have even more of an advantage when that happens. The E55 can't beat it at low rev lugging contests, so when they are both at high revs the M5 will be in its element.

not true. the E65 will be at the same price level as the M5

and how do you know that. just se what s65,cl65 and sl65 cost compared to s55,cl55 and sl55.
E65 is the the same engine as the tree others or is it a completly new one with no supercharger?

well well, after E65 comes another new M5..... and the war continues

Still pretty funny that an S-Class is faster in a straight line than the M5..

....and it is even more funnier that S-class is faster than a E55, almost as a SLR too. But till what cost, I rather drive a M5 or a E55 than a big luxurycars for half the price.
If BMW wanted a car to be as fast as a S-class, they would build one. No need for it cause the only thing mercedes is after, is bragging rights.

It's funny to read that the mercedsfans can't accept there are faster cars than mercedes. Now they have to compare to a rare and much more expensive cars to make them feel better. Are we adults or children? Looks like a Kindergarden to me.---

I have to say that I am genuinely surprised to see the in-gear acceleration of the M5 being faster than the E55. I know on a track the M5 will naturally be much faster and more entertaining, but with the comparative lack of torque and emphasis on top end performance I would have expected the E55 to be faster in the middle gears.. :?

cho_888 09-15-2004 07:44 AM

i can't wait to see this one! i loved the old m5 and i tihnk it will be the same story for the new one. We will have to wait and see i guiess

and the RS6 will be thousands LESS

You're stating something entirely wrong. All "65" engines use twin superchargers, hence the V12 "bi-turbo" tag. It WILL cost at least two M5's. Look how much the CL65 and the SL65 differ in price when compared to their "55" counterparts.

There is a chance that the RS6 will be a thousand less, but keep in mind that the M5's V10 is a normally aspirated motor, which does not need a turbo of some sort for the needed boost, as is the case with Audi and Mercedes's performance offerings.

As with all turbo-based engines, the Merc and the Audi will always have a bit of turbo lag, meaning that the power will never be as gradual and as accessible as the M5's.

BMW's M sport division are regarded by even the heads at McLaren as the best engine builders in the world. Its as simple as that.

mindgam3 09-15-2004 08:43 AM

true, their new V10 they've got in the M5 is a masterpiece. I'd take it over the merc n audi just for that
