Best Rubber for SUVs with big rims?
 

I'm thinking of getting an SUV by the end of this year, and I'm seriously considering 22" rims (not chrome though) to fill the wells... any suggestions on rubbers? I need something that I can use all year round... sun, rain, sleet, and snow.

Nitto makes really good tires for Rappers :wink:

Make sure you fucking buy brakes to fill out the rims! NO not just for looks but for safety! and be ready to have a shittier ride than stock also.

The ride is exactly why I'm asking for tyre advice... I'm planning to fill in the rims with brakes anyway, (hopefully Brembo makes one big enough) but I'm concerned with performance loss and ride quality.

I dont think going to 22" would be a good idea if you are planning to use it in snow. Why because 22" would come with low profile tires with less tread depth. You need all of it to traverse snow.

I personally feel that going for the bling bling wheels is a bad idea as
- Your ride will suffer with the watchband tyre profiles
- Reduced load carrying abilities
- Reduced offroadability
- Poorer snow traction
- Worse braking - extra rotational masses would increase stopping distance
- Less wheel strength - unless you are thinking of the Centerline forged wheels which are strong and light.
- Expensive tyre replacement costs.

If you are concerned about performance and ride quality you should definitely forget about such big rims :D no advantages if not the bling look...

What's the mystery SUV dude? H2? Range Rover? Tamaraw?

I don't mean to be rude but why not get a dodge magnum or a 540i Wagon or something instead of an SUV?? :lol:

you just have to get longer bump stops to prevent that from happening but again no one ever does that when they get these big ass rims including the rappers and sports guys that buy all this shit for their truck and spend the same if not more than the truck cost to buy and never upgrade the brakes to counter act the larger rolling masses of the wheels and all the inertia of that added weight.

T-Bird: I sort of suspected that... I was hoping that maybe by now somebody might have developed performance tyres for SUVs with big rims. (like how Pirelli has with cars)

Doesn't Mickey Thompson (sp?) make any? I would be happy with a set of 20"s or 21"s, then just filling in the wells with wide profile Mickey Thompson rubber.

I pray that I'm not enganging in any wishful thinking... :(

you should get big rims only if youve got a whole lotta money

ummm... Let's just say I'm not worried about the cost of the rims... but I'm not spending a penny unless I can find decent rubber to go with them.

::EDIT:: Just checked MT's website... apparently they make 20" rims... hopefully they've got proper performance rubber for that size as well.

Anybody know of any other brands?

540i is RWD... no good in the snow mate. I need something with real 4WD, like a Range Rover or a Cayenne.

For a Mid Sized SUV like Mine (Nissan X-trail) 18" is more than enough...unless u're talking about the X4 or the XC90.....and Pirelli's SUV tyres are relatvely good...I'm getting them soon....the Scorpion STR....

I think a Honda CR-V would make a splendid ride in the snow. It's a good & solid family car.

seriously Nitto makes really good tires and for trucks look at their site.

The only real problem is you want a large wheel and it will be used on the truck in the winter you will want snow usable tires so that means no mudders and not to small of a profile so you will have to look into all season tires. Mickey Thompson isn't really in that market they are into the off road and drag racing tires mostly. You can have the best 4WD/Awd system on the market but if the tires aren't made for the conditions the 4WD/AWD will be useless. And RWD is fine in the snow in fact can be quite fun at times and then scary at others but you have to remember your not driving a HUMMER or Unimog (I'm guessing) trucks are the worse for heavy snow conditions since there is no weight on the rear so stock up the sand bags.
