Wich laptop?
 

Ok, i've got a budget of about £2000 for a laptop for uni. Weight and size isn't really an issue, but it would be nice to have something relatively slim and good looking ;) Needs to have at least a 1.5Ghz processor, about 1gb or ram, a desent graphics card and a HD above 60gb. I need wireless and regular netowrk connections and at least a 15" screen.

The best i've come up with so far is the Apple powerbook G4:

• 1GB DDR333 SDRAM - 2 SO-DIMMs
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive (5400rpm)
• DVD-R/CD-RW
• AirPort Extreme Card (wireless)
• Backlit Keyboard & Mac OS

• 56K internal modem

Has also bluetooth and regular, firewire and USB connections for just under £2000. All in all this is the best i've found.

Can people please comment on this selection and state some alternatives if possible. I've also been looking at VAIO's and IBM thinkpads...

Not too sure about buying from a relatively unknown brand. I built my last pc up from components myself and it proved not to be very reliable, i want something that will last and will give me minimum hassle, i'll look into it though ;)

So so far the contenders are:

Apple Powerbook G4 15" (just under £2000)
Alienware Area 51m Extreme - £1980
Some vaio
Some IBM

I havent' quite found the right IBM and vaio yet, can anyone find me a desent set up for these 2 for my budget?

Alienware is the* pinnacle in hardware among hardcore gamers and they very are well known dude. Have you clicked the blue magic button at the bottom of the page and checked out the other configurations?

* ok maybe not the but among the top 10 that's for sure and well above your other choices there.... just ask around

or mayb savrow.com is also good, i thin thats were jabba had his desktop "made", not too sure. but alienware is on my "to get" things.
if u want something more normal go with the toshiba 17 inch its cool.

Yup...Alienware is well known in the gamers world.

nice, i see it comes with a 3 year warranty and 24/7 assistance ;) can't be that bad, and i admit, the specs look mighty impressive when you compare them to better known brands.....

Yeah the toshiba has an impressive sized screen. would be my second choice but i haven't checked that savrow you mentioned yet

Yup and prolly the best period. With the 3.2G/2.5Mb cache and full option it certainly is cuz it's the only1 you'll have that tweaked out and under warranty. The only thing missing is the ubercool liquid cooling system :shock: And onboard tissues for the drooling and extra :wink:

hmmm just been reading a few customer reviews from several sites n the general feeling i got was they're not overly reliable and the customer support/warranty is useless.... something i don't want when spending 2g on a laptop

I wouldn't suggest an Alienware laptop. Yes they're powerful and all, but they're aimed mainly at gaming. Therefore battery life is less, it gets pretty damn hot I'm assuming and it's pretty heavy I'm guessing. I personally think Dell or Macs make the best laptops. I don't like Dell, but from what I've read they make damn good laptops.

Laptops - I'd go for the Alienware if it was me choosing but only cos I like to play lots of games!! I had a high end Advent from PC World. I might be wrong but I was told they are made by Toshiba for PC World (by a mate, not by PC world!) It was fine, reliability-wise and my dad still uses it 4 years on with no problems. It cost 2100quid at the time.

Try www.savrow.com who built my 4.0 ghz....they kill anything in terms of benchmarks from alienware or anyone else for that matter.
